i was just going through a search of modems because I'm gonna be building a new system. I was sure that I wanted to get a hard modem, but now I'm not so sure. The system is for someone who will use the modem for all purposes EXCEPT gaming (that means... NO games(heh))

I was under the impression that winmodems slowed the system down, but I read (in one of those old posts) that they are better for non-gaming use.. is this true??

and, to confuse the matter more, but perhaps more importantly, does any of this even make a bit of difference if we're talking about putting in in a Athlon 800 system?

thanks,
-Z

Try reading some of the other posts, they have the information you are looking for. If you still have questions ask them.

a good cheap winmodem would be a lucent chipset, when they ahve the newest drivers they work great, and at $20-30 they are a good deal as well.

cehck out www.ez-net.com/modems (http://www.ez-net.com/modems) for more info on good vs bad modems

With an 800MHz Athlon, the user should never notice the difference. There are even Linux and Be drivers now for soft modems, so you wouldn't necessarily be limited to Windows.
