So me and Joel (jl123) put a second HD on my computer, and we had to download some drivers for the moniter or somethinig, about 6 hrs of work. Well I take the computer home and when I start up the screen is green and flashing, some lines across the screen too. Why? What can I do to fix it?

Check for bent, broken, or pushed in pins on the connector for the monitor. One pin is all it takes... You could also try a different monitor is possible. Good luck.

Well i am Cole's(HHH8785) friend. I installed the new hard drive and the reason why it took so long was because we had a little problem getting the video drivers. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Well i finally got it going with the proper drivers and it was working fine with my monitor(no green lines). Could it be the refresh rates of the on-board video or just that the monitor is too old to handle the refresh rates??

Hi hhh and Joel

I had a similar problem with blue/pink flickering (not green lines, tho). Here's the thread where I got some good suggestions - hopefully some in there for you too!

Good luck! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Hey thanks a lot socalgal for the link and I hope it works. I'm thinking it's the refresh rates that the monitor can't handle. But when i get his computer tomorrow i'll hook it up to my monitor that me and him were working on to see if it does the same thing. I mean it was working fine with my monitor but them all of a sudden I get an email from Cole saying "big problem". So i'll see what i can do tomorrow. Thanks a lot! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Well you see, it isn't just green lines across my screen, the whole screen is a pale lime greenish color with some horizontal lines going across it. I can't see a thing. But my brother messed around with the inside and checked all the connections and we got it to work last night. but when i woke up, i turned it on, and a screen of green showed it's ugly face. same things as earlier. I tried what he did with no luck. But does this probably mean that there is something not connecting right on the motherboard or something?

Man, this sounds so much like a bad VGA cable, I'm tempted to say that's what it is, and just say get a new cable. But you have probably thought of that....

The only OTHER possibilities that come to mind are: when you have a monitor that's old enough to have those "volume-control"-type pots on the front for hue and color adjustments, or you have one of those monitors with the RCA jacks with separate R, G, and B.

When the hue/color pots oxidize (and they do), they can be a real pain and cause problems.

When you have a non-standard monitor with separate R, G, and B, there is a switch that can cause havoc called "Sync on Green/Sync on Blue/Ext. Sync".

I would have guessed you DON'T have either one of those monitors, which are generally not SVGA-compatible (plus, they've both been obsolete for a while).

If this is just a standard type of SVGA monitor, I can only presume either the cable or connectors are bad.

I'd still say it's the connector, or the cable as Mr. Harris suggests. I was called to a school once because a 386 had a similar problem, and sure wnough, one of the pins in the connector had been pushed in. I had to take the connector apart to fix it, but it worked fine afterward. I later sold them a 486 as an upgrade. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Yeah Cole is going to drop the computer off tomorrow and i am going to check that out. I figured it was the cable because the port was always loose(not tightly secured to the case) and there is a chance it's been being tugged at. I'll check it out tomorrow since he didn't drop it off today.

Any pets that might gnaw at the monitor cable? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif My brother has a couple of cats... He still hasn't fixed his speaker wires yet.

Hehe. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Cole has a cat. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif But I don't think that's it.

Ok i think i've pinpointed the problem. I think the problem lies within the case. The vga cable is kind of old and the connectors look like it they might not make good contact with the connectors of the monitor. It's not his monitor because i already tested it on my other system and it works perfectly. So i'm going to order a new vga cable/port on a bracket tonight and we'll just have to wait until i get it. Thanks for all your help and i'll respond later to what i did and tell you how it went.
