I'm so frustrated after my computer these days. Never happened before, but now, my computer always seems to be satureded so everything I do is like running on a 386 (I have a pentium 233MMX with 96RAM). Even if I reboot the system is still slow. Then when I decided to check the windows monitor system, I see that EVEN if I don't do anything, my CPU usage is at 80-90%. I'm not even doing anything and all my apps are closed. Never before had it done that. I've tried to shut down windows and go to DOS, and usually when you do C:\DIR, the file listings go up very quickly, but mine is very slow. So, it's not windows (for once). I might think that my CPU has to be defect or dead... need to be sure, cauz if it is, I'd rather buy a new system, but if it's not, I'd rather pay 50$ for another same CPU instead...
Thanks.

Siph;
When you are at your Windows desktop, and you hit control-alt-delete, and the box pops up to tell you what is currently running, what besides Explorer does it say?
Going to a DOS command-line FROM windows does NOT mean you've unloaded Windows, by the way. Only booting from a reset or floppy, and choosing Command-line Only in the F8 menu can be DOS7 without the WinGUI. To see what I mean, go to DOS from Win9x and then after you get your slow directories, etc., type EXIT at the command prompt.

And perhaps you can use this utility to tell you what is running, and the amount of CPU use for each process....Its an application called Wintop. Pretty cool actually.

This should tell you exactly what is running and what is eating up your CPU cycles.
**Note make sure to view the readme.txt file on the download page too!
