Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : IE5 WON'T RE-INSTALL
I deleted IE5 from my new computer, but now realize that I need it for work. I downloaded the latest version from the Microsoft website and I also tried re-installing it from the MS Office 2000 CD. Both times I recived this message:
"Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system.
Setup cannot continue."
Except there *is* no other version that I can find...help!

Hi, Find the inetcomm.dll file in c:\windows\system and rename it to something like inetcom.old and then try installing IE5..Hope this helps....Mitch

Or, if that doesn't work, just reinstall windows and ie 5 will be put back on, and you won't lose anything...
Thanks. I tried renaming the file, but no luck. I even went so far as to rename all the IE files as "old", but still no luck.
If I reinstall Windows, will all my other programs & data files be OK? (I'm not worried about my desktop stuff, that I can re-do.)

Cjw: Yes just don't format the drive before installing!
You know, just an FYI...I pored over the MS knowledge base for IE5 and found quite a thread with folks who had this same problem. Unfortunately, no one had come up with a solution...and apparently Microsoft doesn't recognize it AS a problem. Go figure.

I am having difficulty unistalling IE 5.5 on a NT Build 1381 SP6a box. IE5Setup states it cannot continue because it has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer on this system... can someone give some insite into this?!

The only way to properly remove IE5 hat I've fopund is a tool available on http://www.98lite.net called IEradicator. It removes IE5 and the system (Win95 or Win98) works fine without it. I don't know if it will remove a half uninsalled copy though.
Good Luck,
Bruce
i hade the some problam i just reinstaled win98 se over top ove itself and presto worked fine again
