Just picked this up and not sure why it's happening. Benchmarked my C: drive "Maxtor 13.6GB Diamond Max plus Ultra DMA 66 7200 RPM) HD and it posted no faster then a Ultra DMA 33?????
Used Sandra to test it.
I have the drivers installed for the 2 Ultra ATA 66 connectors.
Board is an Abit BE-6.
Win. 98
In the bios I have many options on how to set the HD up.
UDMA 0,1,2,3,4
MW DMA 0,1,2
PIO 0,1,2,3,4
Which one do I choose????
Currently the HD is performing no faster than an Ultra DMA 33....
Thanks

The original BE-6 (not II) is known for udma probs, I think it was something about the Highpoint controller,(I dont remember its been awhile, could be wrong) there is a "fix" posted on Abits website, but I could never get it to work...

Well, I have tried and tried again to download the latest patch for the Ultra ATA/66 but the Abit site is either down or extemely busy. If anyone has the latest drivers please send me a link or the file itself. And or let me know what to set the HD too.
Thanks

thekingofpain Thanks for the file. As for the test of the drive and being able to enable the DMA under the device manager there is no DMA anymore. Just: DISCONNECT/SYNC DATA TRANSFER....
Bios is set at AUTO DETECT
And I will have to remove my sound card from the bottom PCI slot. See what happens there.
Thanks for the info.
I will try and locate hdtach .
Thanks for the help. Anymore info is welcome.

Ok. Downloaded the HDTACH and I am getting:
Random Access Time: 11.8ms
Read Burst Speed (average) 51.4 mbps
Sound right for the HD?????

Also, don't forget to enable DMA in Device manager. As for the proper setting use the Auto Detect setting in BIOS. Finally, don't use the bottom PCI slot unless you have to - UDMA66 uses the IRQ's assigned to that slot and sharing is limited to only certain types of cards.

I dont know if this helps, but my IBM drive has a drive-Bios/firmware switch that switches my drive from 33 to 66. You may want to check your drive support site and see if they have such a thing. I bought the ata66 so that when I built a new box I would have a fast drive, as it defaulted to 66 it ran really slow on a 33 controler. Maybe your drive defaults to 33.

PS: A really dumb question, but are you using the right ata66 cable?
(just loaded windows on a new board and I am about to switch back to 66)

I am using the right cable. On IDE 3 (3 and 4 are the Ultra 66). Latest Flash for the Abit BE-6 MB. Set to UDMA 4.

That's all you get with UDMA66. Only the burst rates go above 33MB/s. Physically your hd won't get faster.
