I am currently running a Tyan Trinity 400 mobo with a Via Pro 133A chipset. I also have the latest IRQ routing driver downloaded from Via's website. Currently, there seem to be some IRQ conflicts, and want to see if I can free up some IRQ's. The question I have is, my modem currently uses Com Port 2. Com Port 1 is open, it is not being used by anything. If I disable Com Port 1 in the bios, will that harm anything? Is there ever going to be a time when anything that I use in my computer will need Com Port 1, or is this something that I can do without? If I disable it, that would free up an IRQ. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It is a common practice to disable an unused serial (COM)port in BIOS. It will not cause any harm. If you ever need to use that serial port all you have to do is enable it again in BIOS.
