Please Help!!

Ok i've got a question. If a hard drive is partition into let's say 4 partitions will i be able to format just one of the partitions or will it format the whole drive?

How bout if i delete a logical partition will it delete the information on that partion or not? What happens when a logical partition is deleted??

If you partition a drive. You would normally make the first partion the primary and the rest of the drive as a extended partion. Then you would create all of you logical drives in that extended partions. If you do to use up all that space creating logical drives, then you was that space. if you do do created enough logical drives, then the OS can not see the drives. Yes you format a drive, physical or logical one partition at a time. and why would you not wat to format all of the partions? Also, on preceeding drives, drive 1,2,3 if you physically have that may drives. you would created extended partitions. If you create primary partions on the drives after the first primary, you logical drive sequence will be screwed up.

Joel,
I just want to make sure you were aware of this. Because you didn't mention how you would deleate the partition.
If you are using the F-Disk utility, if you deleate one partion, or try to change the size of one, you will loose all the data on the entire drive.
If you need to make changes to a partitioned drive without loosing any data, you must use a utility like Partition Magic to keep the data intact.

Edit- Formatting is a different story. Yes, you can format partitions on the same drive without loosing data on the other partitions. -edit

btw i just used partition magic for the first time last week...i had a new 10 gig drive and didn't feel like thinking when i installed it so just fdisked the drive into one partition and formatted, then later went back and adjusted everything with partition magic 5...wow talk about easy!!! almost as easy as using the disk admin tool in Win NT!

Dave_H, I don't think that's exactly correct. Deleting a logical drive on an extended partition should only result in the loss of data on that drive. As we know, to completely wipe the data by partitioning you would have to delete in sequence the highest to lowest lettered logical drives, then the extended partition and then the primary partition.
