Go with the current version of Slackware.
http://www.slackware.com/

It's not as "easy to setup" as some flavors but what do you learn when someone does all the legwork for you?

It's a good operating system for individual systems and or stand alone workstation.

This of course is one man’s humble opinion, I’m sure there will be those who think I’m crazy but at least I put in my two cents worth.

Well, if you've got a good background in UNIX from your IRIX use, then perhaps you should jump into either Slackware 7.0, or the latest Debian codenamed "Slink".

I personally will recommend the Mandrake versions as it is what I use and enjoy. (basically it's redhat with the Mandrake tweaks.) One of the nicest parts about Mandrake and Redhat is the ease of setup, avaliblity of "3rd party software in "RPM" format" and the abundance of tech support.

If you want easy install then use RedHat or Madrake, but Mandrake is more optimized for Pentium class computers... anyway you can recompile the kernel (as I did).

But it seems that slackware is better for you. It is harder to install, but once it is up and running is means it had been properly setup for your computer.
