Yep, you need a ripper. Audiograbber is my favourite. Try www.mp3.com (http://www.mp3.com) and their software page. I believe that there are some good links? (If I remember right.)

No, it's not copyright infringement... but some may argue differently.

What you need is an "audio ripper" such as Audio Catalyst. You can take the music off the CD and encode it as .WAV or .MP3, whichever you prefer.

.WAV files are HUGE! (Count on over 450MB for the CD Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon.)

.MP3's can vary in size depending on the bitrate you choose. 128kb is average and higher seems to be better, (depending on who you talk to). Some can hear the difference between the bitrates, but I can't. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

So, there u have it. Audio Catalyst. (I'm sure it got a kick-*** award from Maximum PC mag at one time or another.)

You need a program to rip from the CD to .wav or .mp3. The one that I use is Audio Catalyst. But there are tons out there: audio grabber, liquidMP3, Adapdec Easy CD creator. Some have free evals others cost mega$$. Here is a link to the download with a description:

I hope I answered your question. Let me know how it works.

Oh wow, I didn't see everyone's replies...I must type too slow.

Axel,

If you just want to pull audio tracks from an existing CD to the HD without a big hassle or expense, I would suggest visiting www.goldenhawk.com (http://www.goldenhawk.com)
Go to thier download area and select CDRWin US version 3.7f This demo will allow you to extract tracks & store as Wav fles, and/or burn individual tracks or copy disc-at-once.
(check thier compatibility chart 1st to see if you CDRW is listed for the software)

The Demo will only let you burn at 1x, but it's a very reliable program for what your looking to do & easy to use!
Just pop your CD in your drive, choose ExtractDisk/Track/Sectors. Choose "Select Tracks" in Extract Mode at top, then choose the tracks you want to copy by number in the list shown.

Need any help? Email me at twoofx23@yahoo.com

Hope this helps!

I think I may be missing something here - haven't tried doing this before -

I want to save music from an audio CD to my hard drive - can't just copy it over - all I get is the track pointer, but no music....

Do I need a capture tool - perhaps some real-audio software or something? an MPEG tool or something?

Okay you audio-philes out there - how do I do this?

Eventually, I hope to burn an audio CD full of stuff I like.....but I want to be able to play it off my system for now.

BTW - I own all the music, so I doubt this is a copy-right violation.....

If you have a CD burner, the software that comes with it should allow you to create an image file of any CD you wish to copy multiple times. Load the CD and software and there should be an option to create an image file somewhere or somehow (hint; use help)

Adaptec's Easy CDCreator 4 can create .wav from .mp3 and .cda files and vice versa I believe. I know it can create image files as I have used ver3.

Thanks codybear - your item works just fine -
But I got ambitious and went to mp3.com and downloaded something off their site - attempted to install it, and it totally wrecked my win95 load vxd errors - never booted again -

so - I spent part of the last hour rebuilding my machine and here I am again - gotta remember to run msregclean later....

For those curious souls - Cody was nice enough to send me a beta of CDex which isn't a speed demon, but it has good features and you can do partial rips off audio to take out some of those annoying pre-ambles some artists put ahead of some of their better tracks....

So - been having fun extracting a few choice tracks - takes about 3 or 4 minutes a track with this tool on a PIII 550 machine with a 32 speed teac CD-ROM.

Thanks guys - you opened a few doors for me that my cube-mates probably wish you hadn't <<BIG GRIN>>

Thanks all - very good info - and a good addition to the sysopt archives.

I'm trying it now to see which I like the best.

Hey while we're on this subject this is what I need.

I used to use RealJuke box to convert
MP3-->WAV and I had to reinstall WIN98 and i couldn't find my old Installation file for RealJukebox, so I downloaded new one.
Well on new one there is no option for conversion.
Is there any other software that'll do the same thing anb it works pretty fast?????
