I have heard alot of hype about it, but it all appears to be is nothing more than a glorified win98? What are the advantages? What beta's are out there? Thanks... Pat Kennedy 11-12-1999, 08:10 PM Imagine taking the stability, multi-processor, and all other good things about Windows NT, then add in the gaming support and easy to use nature of Windows 98. It is not a glorified Win98, it is a unified replacement for 98 and NT. Pat drdeath 11-12-1999, 08:22 PM well, not quite - they tried to make it a unified win98/nt but they couldnt. win2000 is still nt 5.0 and win98 is getting updated with the upcoming windows millenium. MS is hoping to finally bring windows NT and 98 together in the next OS after win2k and millenium - its called Neptune, i think.... seti 11-12-1999, 09:00 PM Why would anyone choose Millenium over win2k? Are there compatability issues with Win2k and current win9x software? BBA 11-12-1999, 11:38 PM Millenium has features other Winx OS's can't have.... It does pretty amazing things, along with DirectX8. If you can get the beta, go for it, although the DirectX 7 is in the beta right now, ity still has really neat apps and the desktop is wild. BBA OurSea 11-13-1999, 09:57 PM So does anyone have or know where to get a few of these beta's? I got a test machine that I like to throw beta software at. Zotzmein 11-13-1999, 10:20 PM I read somewhere that Neptune would crawl if you didn’t have a minimum of 128 Megs of “high speed” ram, is this true? Also isn’t Neptune being optimized for the new 64 Bit Itanium series of Intel processors? ----------------------------------- Though I’m not an ant-Microsoft fanatic, all this continued uncertainty of the intended direction of their various operating systems, seems more of a reason to investigate alternate operating systems. Regards to All, Zotz Mein [This message has been edited by Zotzmein (edited 11-15-1999).] xtant 11-15-1999, 09:40 AM It's my understanding that Intel's 64 bit cpu will not be able to run current 32 bit apps. So maybe "optimized" isn't the right word there. Am I wrong in thinking this, or has anyone else here found the same information? drdeath 11-15-1999, 10:30 AM i have heard that too - dont know for sure if it is true tho - it would really suck if that really did turn out to be true.... i also heard tho that AMD is working on a 64 bit cpu that will also be backwards compatible with 32 bit progz/OS's - anyone else hear about that one? Apostle 83 11-15-1999, 11:28 AM Drdeath, you are correct sir! The K-8 'sledgehammer' will be basically designed around k-7 core, but will have the ability to function in 64 and32 bit modes. Haven't read anything that I can remember lately though, on how smooth the transition will be between 32 ad 64 bit applications, whether or not youll have to restart the system, or whether or not there will even be operatins systems that will support the dual mode. It'll be an interesting transition though. welsh wizard 11-15-1999, 03:18 PM Win 2000 will be in diff forms or grades simply put 1 ver will replace 98 another NT, and so on through the MS op'sys. as for 98 replacement it's mem hungry and slow instal at boot up, will need a lot of tweeking. As yet MS hasn't convinced me it's an upgrade. but then they haven't finnished working on it yet, things could improve. /forum/wink.gif WW SysOpt.com
