Ensure that the cpu is not overheating and use thermal paste if not already doing so.

Try looking in the bios (<-not always reliable) or even better open your case and touch the heat sink, if it's warm then no problem but if it's hot you may need to use a better quality fan/heatsink.
I would look to the hard drive for your problem if it isn't heat as it sounds like you may have bad sectors. Try running scandisk on thorough but be prepared for a long wait.

well i followed a procedure that i saw posted on here for creating a bootdisk and reinstalling windows without formatting (cant remeber who posted it) and so far everything is working good. Haven't had any registry problems and encountered no glitches in win98 install. I am gonna keep an eye on my heat because i do leave my pc on all the time. thanks.

Does your motherboard support UDMA/66?
The WD comes defaulted at 66, you must use their software to switch it to UDMA/33 unless you mobo supports 66 do it.
The software is available at WD's site if you dont have it.
Also to monitor your temps if your mobo has a temp monitor chip try this: http://members.brabant.chello.nl/~a.vankaam/mbm/
Repost with anymore questions about the UDMA settings. If this started happening soon after the HD replacemnet I'd look at that closely. Otherwise backtrack, what did you do before the trouble started?

no my board doesnt support 66 but i thought that it had to be enabled in windows, at least thats what the WD software said.

Like I mentioned, the WD I recently installed came set up at UDMA/66, the default. If you aren't going to run it at 66 you have to use their software to switch it to run at UDMA/33
I have the DMA checked in Windows because it's running UDMA/33. I was getting real slow performance and errors like you until I did the above. Pop the WD software in and check it out http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

thank you shadow. i successfully changed to 33 (might have been causing me some of the errors). Now I just gotta figure out why my computer freezes when I run Rogue SPear. I started a new topic on it. THanks guys
