I upgraded to the athlon 700 and have had nothing but problems. I had the athlon installed, the memory, a new cd player and a new power supply. I am running win98 SE. I have system freezes galore. Sometimes I will start the computer and it will shut itself down and restart and go through the scan saying it was shut down improperly. I have menu boxes freezing on the screen,at times I have lost control of the volume except through my speakers, I have it freezing in the shutdown screen and even when the micro plus theme screen comes up. I have two hard drive installed. The tech that installed does not have any answers. Has anyone else had problems like this? Does anyone have any possible solutions? I am sooooo frustrated with this. Thanks for any help you can give me.

It would help if you could post a few more details about your computer. IE;
mainboard details
card details
video card details
bios settings
etc, etc, etc...
I suspect, based on your description that you might have....
1) An IRQ conflict. Check this out in device manager. It may well be with your sound card and another card / device but don't rule out a problem with other cards too.
2) The bios is set incorrectly. IE cas latency. AGP settings etc.
3) The system is too hot. Feel the heatsink (CAREFUL!) after the system crashes. If it is too hot to touch then it is too hot to run.
You may need to update your bios, and or mb, chipset, video, drivers to the latest levels in order for it too become stable.

SDT.

Thanks a lot. It was not me who asked the question, but your advice solved my problem. Thanks a lot.

Past experiance sugests that your power supply is not a 300w unit and the random faults also point to a power supply
