I am having a problem with the PCCHIPS M748LMRT/Windows 98 recognizing my ISA or PCI modem. The manual states that only one slot can be used at a time. Here is what I did:

1) Installed ZOOM 56K ISA modem jumpered as IRQ 12 and COM2 PNP mode. There was no conflicts in system-control panel. COM1 was originally the only com port assigned to the serial mouse. Modem installed with no conflicts and shows up in modems list and system. However, when you do a DIAGNOSTIC, MORE INFO it says it cannot communicate with modem. Obviously, dial-up networking is not working either. *Important to note that the M748LMRT comes with a built-in modem (that doesn't work very well I might add) and it is configurable on COM 2,3,4.

2) Since the ISA modem card wasn't working correctly I than went ahead and took it out replacing it with a PCI U.S. Robotics modem, which subsequently was recognized at all and was completely useless.

I can't figure out if I'm making some kind of bad IRQ assignment or if there is a problem with the board, BIOS. Any help would be appreciated.

-IN Control Panel-->Device Menager
Disable your built in modem.
-Highlite device, go properties and check on
-Disable in this hardware profile
-Reboot

You might want to get the newest drivers for you modem also, you can find it on U.S. Robotics website..
Let me know what happens...

I have tried to disable on-board modem in hardware profile and experienced the same problem. Also, I jumpered the motherboard to disable the modem. Still same problem. It does not communicate to the modem! Help.

Yeah i figured out what you did wrong. It all started the second you thought "I'll bet there is nothing wrong with a PCChips motherboard." I have one two, and it sucks. I can't find anywhere to get support for my model, it is screwed up, weird, just overall horrible. I would recommend getting a new motherboard. That is what I plan on doing.
