Check that the ide cable is correctly fitted in the mobo and the cd-rom as they can come loose. Also check the power cable to the cd-rom aswell.

Everything is plugged in, it just isn't being recognized!

I would try it on another machine and if it is the same then it seems like it has gone to meet it's maker. They are pretty cheap nowadays but I know that is not what you want to hear so any other ideas anyone http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.

Noresull (John);
Can you tell us if this is just a late development all by itself, or if this happened after reinstalling Win95, or if some software knocked it out?
Happening all by itself is covered in Brydon's response. I'd say the Power Molex connector is one of the most difficult to fit on tight... it's a really stupid connector. PUSH HARD to be sure.
Try an audio cd and use headphones to listen to CD. Disconnect the data cable to it, turn on your machine, and listen to headphones. It should play when you put one in the tray (about 8 second delay). If not, CD-ROM drive may be defective.
On Windows and PC interaction with CD:
If this CD-ROM is on the secondary IDE channel without other "neighbors" (no co-existing hard drives etc.), check BIOS to see if secondary channel is enabled. Then check if Windows 95 LIKES your secondary channel (Device manager conflicts).
Then (assuming they're okay) we go to a longshot (but more likely if windows reinstalled or newly installed): look at msconfig and check config.sys and autoexec.bat-- if old device drivers are still out there to be loaded, like
Device=NECIDE.SYS CD01 {in config.sys}
and
MSCDEX blablablala.. CD01 {in autoexec}
then add the word REM before each of them. Win95 no longer needs (and is sometimes confused by) the "real mode" drivers for CD-ROM after the install, and SUPPOSEDLY remarks them out itself, but often it doesn't. IF that is taken care of, reboot and see if your Atapi device is back.

Found it! The power connector was loose. I pushed real hard, and then I felt it go in about an 1/8" more!

Thanks for all the fast responses!

Glad to see you are sorted.
I just wanted to add a possible cure for those strange occasions when you reload Win 95 from the CD only to find that upon re-booting, Windows tells you no CD is present. Search for the string "noide" using FIND in REGEDIT, delete it and re-boot and you have the secondary controller back.
