This is an embarassing question for me but is striping, as in "disk striping," pronounced stripe(with a long "i" sound ..as I think it should be, or strip as the dopey net tech at work keeps insisting?

In the computer term "disk striping" the "I" is long.
--------------------
The procedure of combining a set of same-size disk partitions that reside on separate disks (from 2 to 32 disks) into a single volume, forming a virtual "stripe" across the disks that the operating system recognizes as a single drive. Disk striping enables multiple I/O operations in the same volume to proceed concurrently, thus offering enhanced performance.

Zotz,
It's a bit off topic, but your informative reply pretty much covered the bases on the subject, Congrats on being a full fledged member!
I just hit the mark myself, the other day.
