I'm wondering if someone can help out with a y2k issue I think I might have to deal with. I'm a student studying software engineering so I understand the problem itself and how it relates to software applications but I'm wondering how I can tell if my PC is going to have some issues on new years. I was making an adjustment in my bios earlier and noticed on my date/time setting that I only have a 2 digit year allocation. I'm not to familier with how a systems bios interacts with the hardware so I don't know if this is going to cause me a problem or not. Can anybody shed some light on this for me, thanks in advance.

Can you describe your system and motherboard a little? It's quite likely that if your BIOS only shows 2 digits that a BIOS flash is necessary in order for a smooth transition to the year 2000.
A motherboard make and model number would be perfect. Then all you have to do is look up the manufacturer for an update.

every time you start your computer windows or what ever os your using get's it's time date info from your bios there are a few othere programs the look to the bios for that info also instead of using the OS
the bios uses a clock chip like in a watch to keep time, some of the older mobo's used reaally cheap clocks that only did years in 2 digits all the newer ones use 4 digits
but the soft ware has to be /YYYY compliant to read it look in your dios and se if you can change the year to read /yyyy
and yes look for a updated bios
you can also go to www.cnet.com (http://www.cnet.com) or www.zdnet.com (http://www.zdnet.com) or a lot of othere sites that have free software that will check your computer for Y2K compiance and most will tell you to a point what you need to fix or upgrade.
hope that helps /forum/smile.gif
