Pretty cool...my friends friends friends's comp wouldnt work, so my friend (the first level one..we'll call em Paul), got his friends who know a bit about comps to try n fix it...It wouldnt..uh..start..yeah.

So I he asked me...and he said that the kid would pay me for it. I took it in and fiddled with it. The thing was in total disarray..They had cables flipped, a corrupted HDD...the whole deal. After getting it all fixed up and tweaked out, I gave it back to em and he told me he'd get me 50 bucks for it! (no new parts cept for some HS grease and a 80mm fan). This is great...kinda a temp job type thing I guess..Oh well it was fun. /forum/smile.gif

Way to go AEdge! Word-of-mouth reference from the owner of the fixed comp is the best advertising too... /forum/wink.gif

way to go auraedge. I've always said to myself why you didn't do this type of stuff more often. hopefully you'll get more gigs like this but the sure thing is to go work at some shop. you're not totally utilizing your talents my sitting at home. 50 almost pays for the soyo 6bva mobo. have fun

Before my comp days in about april, I went to a repair guy who I thought knew everything...It was all cool til after the 2 hour deal, he charged us 80 bucks per hour bench time....all for a stupid SoftBIOS problem. (I thought it was real complicated back then). Then after that was done, he was trying to sell us a mediocre 17 inch monitor for 500 bucks.

Anyways real hecktic...and I always wanted to do stuff the right way..not the rip off way like that guy I went to..I mean the guy hesitated to give me a $1 Slot cover! Wit my repair job, I added everything needed, tweaked it out as much as possible without OCing it, Installed all programs I thought were useful, and gave em a CD with all the drivers I downloaded for thier system, as well as a boot disk if anything else happens.

Anyways thanks Bigslammer for the advice. I just turned 17 (and thereby getting my annual income of relatives givin me cash /forum/smile.gif). Ill also be able to drive soon, as soon as I get the test scheduled and passed. Mom said she'd get me a used car, and THEN I can get a job..I gotta live with that healthy sum of birthday money til then tho. ')...then Christmas....ahh...Christmas.. /forum/wink.gif

Hey congradulations on the repair work. I started getting little jobs like that a few weeks ago. Now over the past 2 weeks I've worked on more than 8 computers, and gotten all of them running. And now they have me showing some students around the inside of a computer tomorrow. See, it all kinda balloons... Good work.

Congrats /forum/biggrin.gif on a job well done!

I too do some repair and consulting work on the side (helps finance MY computer habit). and I actually charge quite a bit LESS than the local computers stores for my time. (I usually refer the client to a couple of "parts" places to buy what they want or need and I provide the "labor/knowledge". I dont have the time or desire to create a "stock room" of parts for sale.

My fees in the summer have usually been a few vine-ripened tomatos or something else from the garden. Most people around here are pretty poor and I just do it cause it's fun for me and it helps them out. Once in awhile someone slips me a little money, but I never ask for anything but parts money (usually not much of that). The "pros" around here rip people off so bad it makes me gag!
Just be sure this is something you WANT to do, because it does tend to get out of hand sometimes.

I will agree to that! Just be sure this is something you WANT to do, because it does tend to get out of hand sometimes
I just let the "client" know upfront that if I cant fix it...I dont charge ANYTHING! which is so different from the "computer store repair shops". If they choose to have me buy the parts that they need I just hand them the receipts from the wholesale places and they pay whats listed on it...No markup. Just my time /forum/smile.gif Needless to say I keep pretty busy in my spare time /forum/biggrin.gif

Congratulations on a job well done! I like your ethics.

You will be very busy if you follow Mntsnows advice; but no more all-nighters for me.
