HP Pavillaslug 333 amd, no-name mobo. On installing a couple of modems I get the same problem. The add modem wizard will find the com port then the pci modem and the drivers go in OK. In "Modems" the diagnostics shows the modem to be installed and working ok, same in device mgr. When trying to dial out the system says there is no modem. I've went into safe mode and deleted all the modems and re-booted and let it find and reinstall them, still no-go. I've been to network and made sure tcp/ip and the other stuff there that one isp says I need, still no-go.. any thoughts, have I covered everything. Strangely, my NEC bb unit has just lost it's ability to dial out on most all the isp's I've got loaded into it. But the other units work fine, I didn't change anything on either that I'm aware of... thanks for da help in advance. DrVette

In the properties section for your dial-up networking connection, under the drop-down list box for "connect using"....make sure that the modem that you presently have in your system is correctly selected.
I know on mine, if I replaced a modem with another, it still showed the old one that it was originally setup with until I specified the newer one.

Yep Target is prolly right. The only thing I have to add is to check the modem control panel and remove all modems that are listed EXCEPT the actual modem that is installed. You can install 100 modems through software if you want to but of course you'll never dial out with them.

had a similar problem, this may be redundent but at cont.pan/system/device mgr. kept finding more than one modem listed, deleted all and installed modem all went well.

Thanks Folks, please note that in my post I'd already deleted the modems even in "Safe" mode. Thanks yet AGAIN to Target, he's hit yet another home run.. I went into dial-up networking in "MY Computer" , right clicked on my isp, changed from "generic modem" to my el-cheapo, and now it works fine.. We don't hear much from Target, he's in the background letting others have fun, showing up only when needed badly http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif , thanks pal, DrVette
