Okay, i installed one of two modems recently (the second one was brand new thinking it would help), and the pentium II 350 win 98 gives me the error message ' does not have dial tone can't dial out'.. I used the com port 2 and/or 4 thinking one would be better than the other. But the situation is:
I have irq conflicts in the system resources of having 4 devices in #12. One of them being com 4. In #11 i have three conflicts one of them being com 2. the other two are pci steering? The modem in question is a simple motorola phone/fax/data 56 k along with a cd of current drivers. How can i change the com port to a setting that is available? I have tried 2 / 3/ 4 and 5 all with no dial tone. The phone is correct. (daisy chained to other telephone that does have dial tone). and what are these other settings? can they be changed or deleted?

go into the control panel>modems>proprties>
connection about half way down there check box (wait for dail tone)uncheck it.if that does not work and your phone service has voice messaging you will need to clear your messages.

sorry and thanks for your reply, but it is not that easy a fix. i tried that already, and no there is no messages on line it is a dedicated phoneline no messages or call reply or call waiting etc..
ttodd,
try removing your modem drivers (and modem if neccesary) and reboot. Before you install it make sure there are no conflicts or errors. If win98 will autodetect it install with the drivers provided. If not go to control panel and modems to install. I dont know how your system is configured but I had com 3 free. Try using that. Make sure that you phone line is plugged into the right RJ11 socket. The one marked "line" goes to the wall and the one marked "phone" goes to the phone. I installed a motorola modem for a friend and recieved the error "no dial tone" All I did was reomove it from the O/S remove it from the PC and reinsert and install. It worked fine.

Take out all your system stuff like video card,sound card,modem and put them in different slots then try using your modem if it still wont work format your HDD and reinstall Windows then install your drivers if it still wont work take it to the place where you bought it. if there really stupid and wont replace it throw the modem at them and go buy a new one in a different store.

Go into your BIOS(setup on boot) Under advance
serial port A =enable
Base should be 3F8
IRQ 4
Serial port B=disable
Paralle port: enable
Mode=Bi-directional
Base 378
IRQ 7
Save and exit, reboot to safe mode. In device manager remove the com's, remove the modem or modems, sometimes there are ghosts. Remove anything else in there with an exclamation mark on it. Reboot. This should give you com 1 and lpt 1 your modem will be on com 2. It should find your modem. Or you might have to help it find it. Post back and let us know how that went. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
