i mean on laptops where space is everything
why use a CD-rom ? when a minidisc can hold as much data and its so much smaller
i mean the comps could be alot smaller if they started using them instead of cd-s

Yeap... computers could be smaller, but there are limitations... and the most important is cash.

Would you buy a standard laptop with CD-Rom or another with mini disc or dvd which increases the price around 10-25% depending on the brand, accesories, etc.

Also laptops could be as small as the libreto from toshiba or even smaller, but then how would you read and write on it? /forum/smile.gif

MD does not store as much computer data as CD. It does, however, store as much audio data as CD. MD uses a much higher compression ratio on music than CD. CD is typically 20:1 whereas the MD ATRAC is 80:1. MD can store about 160MB of data.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for using MD on computers, as it is a very stable read-write medium. But, today's world would want a much higher storage capacity than it would have 5 years ago when MD really started to get into the market.

BTW, I can read and write on my Toshiba Libretto and my HP 200 (even smaller than the libretto) just fine!

Just give it a couple years, I'm sure they're working on it as we speak. Technology just gets better and smaller everyday. Just look at cell phones 5 years ago compared to today.
I saw an article in MaximumPC that had a HD at around 2" wide and long, and even smaller thick. Of course they only held around 250MB of space but still it's pretty small.
