I bought the ABIT BE6-II mobo recently and have had nothing but problems.
First I had all my hardware and drivers installed and it worked fine. Then I installed the driver for the the Ultra ATA/66 controller on the mobo and I kept getting fatal exception errors when I booted up. So I atarted over. Format, install win98, install mobo drivers, and then I installed the Ultra ATA/66 controller. That worked fine until installed my sound card(Aureal Vortex 2). After I installed the driver for the card it started detecting the devices on the card(game port,sb emulation, etc.) and then came the fatal exception again. Just to make sure it wasn't the Vortex card I put my SB X-Gamer in and it wouldn't even install the driver without the fatal exception error. So now I felt like throwing it out the window but instead I desided to disabled the ATA controller. Now the sound card works without any errors. But I have a board with two useless ATA 66 IDE Plugs that I would like to use. This might be long and be confusing but if any one can make any sense and help me PLEASE do!!

I have the same mobo but fortunatly haven't had any problems. There was a lot of discussion on this problem in the newsgroups. Try news://news-server/alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.abit
or flash your bios to the QY it upgrades the HPT 366 to v1.22
good luck

I stayed away from this mobo when building my most recent systems because of the problems I have heard of with the Highpoint Controller. I opted for a BF6 and a Promise ATA66 card. You may want to see if there is a newer version of the highpoint driver at the Abit site. Hopefully they have fixed this problem by now.
best of luck

I used to have simlar prob w/be6, solved it by getting an Asus.
I found that it was best not to install any pci device into slot 3, this conflicted with ata66. Check the manual it will tell you what slots are shared w/what! you will have to switch pci devices around till you find a suitable spot, some allow irq sharing and some dont.
You would probably have problems w/SBL no matter what board U got, you need the liveware v3, and latest drivers, this supports higher cpu speeds and should get rid of BSD problems.
Hang in there, its probably an awesome board that wont dissapoint once U sort this out!

I've tried everything itseems like. I've changed every thing I could think of. I even tried to switch the processor and that didn't help. I'm at a loss now. I guess I'll just keep the DMA 66 disable till I find the info to enable them. Thanks you guys.

I agree with a couple of the above posts, sounds like an IRQ problem. First go to system properties and write down what irq's are being used by what...without the sound card in there..then check your sound card manual for what irq's it needs. You can then go in to the bios and under PNP/PCI configuration, check the PIRQ section for what IRQ's are assigned to what slot. You may have to "force" a slot to take a different IRQ to accomodate the sound card...
does that make sense or am I rambling?

Hi! First of all, I had the same problem you're experiencing right now. I have an Abit BE6 motherboard, P II processor, WD hard drive, and a Sound Blaster MP3+ card. Now, from experience, I can tell you SB cards DO NOT like to share resources. My card takes over 2 IRQs for itself. When you go to install the Highpoint drivers, they also need an IRQ. The conflict starts here. If you don't have enough IRQs free, the system attempts to share them. My system refused to run ATA 66 because it was trying to share the SB's IRQs with the Highpoint drivers. It disabled the drivers, and let the sound card run fine. Please be warned: Re-assigning IRQs can be fatal to the system. I tried it on someone's advice. The result was a complete reformatting of my hard drive because I messed up the settings to the point where Windows would not boot.
Prior to this, I found out that the the IRQ for my graphics card (ATI Rage Xpert) could share with the ATA 66 driver. Hope this helps!
P.S: In case you're wondering, I gave up trying to run ATA 66. I'm not thrilled about that, but my system runs perfect now.

Well.. I took my system in to a computer shop and had them set up for me. Now it works great. One thing the tech told me, was that even though I was only installing the drivers and not using the High Point slots, for them to work I had to have a drive hooked up to one of them in order not to get the Error. So He hooked my hard drive up and installed the drivers and it works fine. Thanks for all of you help everyone.
