I'm pretty sure I've got a bad cpu here but just wanted your thoughts. When I've got it set for 475, it will let me into the bios and start to boot up(either into win 98 or a boot disk) but then freezes. I turned it down to 450 and it loaded win 98, but was really unstable, it kept performing illegal acts, freezing, and just crashing all the way around. So I turned it down to 400 mhz and it seems to be fairly stable.... no crashes or anything yet. Right now, it's running at about 115 degree's...what's a normal temp? I need to just send it back but really don't feel like going through all that and was wondering what you all thought. Do you think it will last as long as I keep it underclocked? Thanks. Casey

I had the same type of problem with a new 400mhz AMD chip. I had been using my mobo with a 300 for over a year and wanted some more speed. I bought a 400 because the mobo manual said it would handle it. Well, manuals ain't always right. THe first thing it did was scramble the registry. It was so bad I couldn't even install win 3.1. I then got a new board and it worked perfectly until I pput the 500mhz chip that I swapped a freind for because he bought a board that couldn't handle it. My machine is rock stable and the chip runs at 120F normal and goed up to 150F when I'm playing Unreal Tournament. So my advice would be to try the chip in someone elses board and see what happens.

Is 475 overclocked? If not then how long have you had the chip? Does your system crash with a different CPU? If < 30 days old and you have not overclocked it and your system works fine with a different CPU then it's time to send it back.
The motherboard is fine. It'll handle everything up to 550 k6-2 or a 450 k6-3. 475 is not overclocked , that is the processor speed. And it is less than 30 days old....just bought it Saturday at the Market Pro show in Columbus Ohio. I know I should send it back, but I just hate having to do anything like that(I'll have to ship it to them and do the transaction over the phone), it never seems to go right. Oh well...thanks for the info...

Wow, that temp sounds kinda high. I have a new K6-2/500 that I'm running at 500, and the CPU temp stabilizes at about 105 degrees F. The dealer I bought the mobo/CPU from installed a pretty healthy heatsink and fan on the thing. I think the mobo BIOS temp warning kicks on at about 130, and it shuts down at 150 or so. I'm thinking of bumping the multiplier up to 5.5X, and the core voltage to 2.3 volts to see how she runs at 550 MHz. If the temp stays under 120, I'll be happy. Are you sure your core voltage is set correctly? 2.2 volts?
Core voltage is 2.4....triple checked all the jumpers. They make 2 different 475's if I'm not mistaken, a 2.2 and a 2.4 core voltage. When said I had it turned down to 400, I should have said that I left the core voltage the same, just changed the multiplier and bus speed jumpers. Think I should I should try it at 2.3?
