heres what I want:
1. every motherboard made with both scsi and ide

2. unlimited irq's

3. more than frickin 5 pci slots

4. computers with no load time

5. cooler lookin cases with actual colors

6. one drive that plays cd rom, dvd, and creates cd's.

7. REAL plug and play capabilities

I mean, its 1999, why are we so limited with our computers? ok ok, So im only 20 and i wasnt around back in the day to appreciate what computers can do these days compared to before..BUT...

sigh. Oh well. im not expecting any replies to this, but I was just curious what everyone else wants out of there computer now that for some reason isnt available.

Wouldn't it be nice if humans were perfect beings....and money wasn't the motivateing factor in our lives. That the betterment of humanity was the only reason needed to brake molds and develope new technologies. Ha, I'd like to see raid drives in a single encasement...with a firewire interface, those ribon cables are ugly and block airflow. And I'd like to be able to oc my cpu the same way I do my video card....a slider, 1 mhz at a time. And I know it's propriaty....but wouldn't mini discs be cool?

Ya, mini disks, bigger than a zip 250, holds less than a zip 100, what a great technology! How about 8 USB2 on the inside of every motherboard so you could plug in up to 8 hard disks on ATA/400 standards! DVD-RAM plays cds, plays dvds, writes cds, and writes dvds, and is rewritable on both. Unlimited IRQs it the chipsets job. 5PCI slots is all the present chipsets do. No load time, we are there, you say, "my computer take a minute to start," but DOS is loaded almost instantly, right after BIOS checks that everything is in full working order. Cases, like with Imac and stuff? True plug an play in no here, I will say that, try pulling out your AGP card and putting in a new one while the conputer is on, wait don't!

What's holding us back?

$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Why sell a 256MB stick when you can sell 2x128MB sticks.

"Of course its more expensive, you're getting two of them"

Create the demand, then supply it. That's why memory prices are so screwy. Pure greed.

Infinite (or perhaps dynamically shifting on demand) IRQs is a nice idea. Bet that would need an architecture rethink though...

I'm surprised the engineers at Intel haven't worked on the 15 irq's thing. There have only been 15 for as long as I I've been fooling around with computers, about 7 years, and I'm sure longer than that.
If the designers can add usb, agp, pci, ata66, and three new flavors of scsi in that time, why not add at least 5 more irq's?

Let's see... out of the seven we have #3,#5 and as Killer mentioned #6. We sorta have #4 too, with the STR features on some boards.

Note:
Suspend to RAM (STR): All tasks are stored in RAM and can be resumed within seconds from the minimum power consuming suspend mode.

We also have the small 3" CD-Rs. Its not the home audio "MiniDisc" but a recordable CD-R in the small 3" format. Great for giving out a few large files. Much cheaper than handing out Zips which we never seem to get back, especially in a business enviroment, don't really ask for them back you know.

I know you said ALL but the multiple CPU boards these days come with Ultra/160 SCSI controllers.(along with 6 PCI slots, two of them are even 64-bit 66MHz slots.)

Yeah..I know thhere are more than five slots on some, but mine only has five so it was more of a whining thing than anything else /forum/smile.gif I would like at LEAST 10. I mean my motherboard only takes up half of this case here...hows about some more slots? and the idea of firewire instead of those ugly ribbons is also great. I hate have to fish everything through my case blindly.

Well - if we're going to dream - how about making a city fiber ring a public utility and making internet access something that costs 25 cents a week with unlimited usage that also gives you cable and telephone access as well as in-home banking, child/elder parent monitoring, security networks to prevent crime, and a true democracy where everyone has access to all the facts and instant voting capabilities.

I agree that ribbon cables need to be updates somehow too. The same ribbon cables have been around forever, with the exception of the new ata66 cables, and they're nothing revolutionary.
Maybe we'll see a lot more new features for mobo's when the 64 bit chips come out. It's already been decided that they will not support 32 bit apps, so hopefully the chipset designers will take the initiative to improve some of the 10 and 15 year old designs that we're burdened with now.

There's a lot to be desired. But things are shaping up ...you know?

If I recall correctly, there was mention by someone here of round IDE ribbon cable replacements which are available. Someone else just "stripped" (peeled) the individual wires apart and bundled the together. With the new 80 wire IDE cables it be somewhat of a hassle tho'.

Companies dont put out all they can because then they have something to fall back on. For instance, why did windows release a 2nd vers. of win98? to make more money... such is life...

now THAT is a system to dream of (with today's limitations of course)

what is a solid state drive?

I skimmed through it...I think it's like virtual hd on ram or something

a solid state drive is basically a large chunk of dram. the access time is a lot faster (.05 as compared to 8.5 or 9ns access time). there are also no mechanical components so I would suppose that a hard-disk crash would not happen. They are usually used in applications like a large and busy oracle database which has massive amounts of data flowing to and from it.
