Check it out..I was just thumbing the numbers in the new EGM..and its pretty amazing..
It had FPU of 6.2 GFLOPS and 66 million polys/s
MY celly 550 with TNT is putting out 737 MFLOPS...Thats 6200 is a LOT more.
Also, the PSX2's will use Rambus (RDRAM), and will also be able to used as a tabletop DVD player...It also has 2 USB ports and 1 firewire port. These console systems are starting to look more and more like real comps.
Also the Emotion engine CPU it uses is 128-bit at 295MHz..is that the same 'bit' as Itanium and Sledgehammer 64-'bits' or is it more like GeForce 256's 256-'bit'?
Too bad tv's are stuck on 640x480 30Hz-interlaced /forum/frown.gif

Dont forget about digital TV and Trinitrons vegas! I tell you this, when I can write programs on a PSX2, have a keyboard, mouse, overclock, replace outdated components, plug in a nice computer monitor, plug in a 20gb hard disk drive, and all the other advantages that computers have, then I will sell my computer off.

I certainly share your enthusiasm, Aedge. PSX2 technology is definitely a “Little Wonder”. Sony even designed and manufactured the chip. It’s amazing.
The beauty of the PlayStation consoles, is in its simplicity. It doesn’t try to be anything else then what it already is. And what it does do, it does flawlessly. -B.E.
I'm hearing rumours that the PS2 is a ***** to code for. Many are suggesting that there will only be half a dozen companies with the resources to produce games that really push the machine: Psygnosis, Sony, Square, etc. Anyone remember what killed the Saturn?

I don't know, *shrug* I think that may be just that. Rumours.
Sony is shrewd and very smart. They wouldn't alienate the huge base of game developers (unless they want to deliberately get rid of a company)that rallied around the PSX. Nor would they want to hamper the future of their newest console in any way. As well as the humongous number of people who own the games that are out now. They're the ones (along with PSX owners) who kept the original PSX going for all these years. It has had a long lifespan -for a 33MHz gaming console. And Sony knows it. We all do. In this day and age of computer hardware [and gaming] technology, the lifespan of the PSX is unheard of.
I think they know what they are doing ...right from the very start.

Hehe I won't knock Sony either. I've had a PS since Sept 95, the UK release, and until the CD mechanism broke (batch problem) I was very happy. Then I got a gamesworthy PC /forum/smile.gif
They have the console market sewn up at the moment. Making the PS2 backwards-compatible is also VERY wise.
I think the PS and its games now account for something like 30% of Sony's total revenue. I also imagine they have planned everything very carefully /forum/smile.gif
I'll probably get a PS2 after the first wave of price cuts, a) for use as a DVD player, and b) to replace my PS1 so I can play all those classic games!

Yeah...I'm certain to get one myself.
What about the instumental theme which plays when you start the system. Now that's a classic in itself! *lol*

Yeah
the settop DVD player itself can cover a huge chunk of the price.
Also they say they plan to use the Firewire port for internet connectivity when non dial up connections get cheaper.
Sounds like an excellent plan to me...
And the fact that they didnt try to juice up some weird name and that they stuck with Playstation 2 is pretty neat in its own weird way.

nin-ten-do. i have mucho confidence in them with the new console. Sony made a big mistake squealing about it's specs so early. but, since i'm pretty sure that y'all won't be receptive to my arguments, i won't continue. but on the PSX2 programing, i have to say this: the word from many programers is that Sonys dev kits were very bad. many have been complaining that it takes alot of use to understand them, and that it's constantly frustrating. kinda like windows.
