I just purchased a plextor 8x/4x/32x. My question is, should I still buy a CD ROM or can I use the CDR as my CD ROM? Would it be better to just get a CD ROM and slave the CDR or should it be the other way around? Thank you in advance.

As above but make the burner the master.

I tend to both agree and disagree - I prefer to use a regular CD-ROM for most usage, but the burner is handy cause sometimes it'll read discs that are a lot more trashed than the reg drive will read.
I slave my burner to my regular CD-ROM, though, because with the regular drive as slave (and don't ask me why) I get buffer underruns even burning at 1x. with the burner as the slave I can burn at full 4x with no problems.

Yeah, CD-Rom drives are nice and cheap - you should get one if you have a free bay, etc.
Also, if you're going to be duping discs, you will want the CD-RW and CD-ROM on different channels. Even better, if you have a separarate ATA/66 controller and HDD, you can configure it so everything has it's own channel. This set-up is working really well for me.
BTW, that is a very good drive. My only complaint is that the Plextor software only works with Plextor drives, so it doesn't even recognize my CD-ROM - drag! However, it comes wil Adaptec EZ CD creator too so it doesn't matter much.

My cd-rw (yamaha) takes longer to read a cd also. I think it checks it over to see if it is a writable disk first, then it reads it. I have my cd-rw as a slave and never have a buffer under run at 4x when burning an audio cd.

I was getting occasional buffer under-runs with the burner as the master and the cd-rom as the slave.
I was also getting occasional buffer under-runs with the burner as the master all by itself on the secondary IDE channel with the cd-rom as the slave to the hard drive.
I run my CD-Rom as the master and the Burner as the slave on my secondary IDE port. It works best for me with this set-up. I haven't had a buffer under run with this set up.
