I have a preference for a cleared off desktop. I can get rid of most of the junk that dumps onto the destop on Win98 install but:
Is there a way to get the Systems Properties icon, Network icon etc off my desktop and somewhere else? All my attempts have failed so far. ( I know, this is a stupid thing to worry about, but it's buggin' me, OK?)

Go to my utilities page and download
tweakui
You can remove most of what you want off the desktop with it.

right click on desktop. Go to Properties. Go to Effects. Click box that hides icons. You can have an icon-less desktop and a webpage wallpaper of your choosing. I don't care for icons either! /forum/smile.gif

whoa....I never noticed that before. I hated using all those programs before that hid the icons but they were really still there. only thing is that it has to be as a web page for the background. oh well...I hate icons =)

Thanks to you both!
Nathan,
I went to your site and downloaded Tweakui, took me a second, but I got it installed on the control panel and it came right up, haven't had time to try it out yet, but I'm sure it will be most usefull. (I pegged your site as a favorite for later investigaion too, Thanks a lot!)
Brangwen,
You make it sound so easy, I feel like I should have known that. I guess I've got a lot to learn about Windows. Thanks!

I would offer the suggestion that you check EVERY setting in tweakui before applying any changes. Otherwise, you may apply some which you didn't want.

I'll will take that into consideration and proceed with caution. I always like to update my rescue disk and take an image prior using any new utilities. I know what you mean though, it's those inadvertent changes that can really mess with your mind.

It's a little more complicated, but you can hide all of the dekstop icons with policy editor too.
You have to be more careful with what you change in there than in tweakui, but it works.

or, if you just want to hide the network neighborhood icon, and not all the others, there is a registry tweak you can use. go here in your registry:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer]
create a new DWORD VALUE and name it "NoNetHood" without the quotes. then give it a value of 1 to hide the network neighboorhood icon, and 0 to bring it back.
A simple option, for stuff you like handy, is to drag the icon to the taskbar and delete the desktop icon. I find this REAL handy for Notepad and Calculator among other things. It means they're usually visible and just a click away if you want to cut and paste or work something out.

These are all great suggestions, keep it up, I'm learning a lot about Icons (or the lack of 'em). If knowledge is power, then I'm gaining on those measley little icons, slowly but surely.

Nice pic MntSnow! What's the little quick launch icon with a clock in a gold square?
Where is the pic from?

The pic on my desktop is from Digital Blasphemy (http://www.digitalblasphemy.com) His web site is great! He has many pics that are free to download but he also has some that you can buy. (this one I think is now in the "free" section.
The little gold button in my quicklaunch bar is for Outlook2000. I have the premire edition of Office2K and LOVE IT.

Desktop 'and' Digital Blasphemy site are awesome, lot of hours of work in some of those for sure, it's nice to see creative minds at work. I like the way the image at the gateway to the Free Gallery comes into focus, ya gotta love that interactive stuff when it's done right.
