That Jeep 4x4 banner flashing 'Yes No' 'Yes No' is darn annoying!

After I first saw that, I decided to totaly ignore all the advertisements for a month, no matter how good they seem or are.

I highly agree. In fact, I sent an email to EarthWeb's advertising production department about it. Apparently, that's how all about.com campaigns are /forum/frown.gif. But please don't ignore all our ads because of that one - this site wouldn't be here without advertising revenue.

And you can do like I do with any annoying banner ads such as this one - just click stop and the animation is frozen.

Nathan, what is AtGuard, and what does it do? Is it a shareware?

Thx

check it out here http://www.Atguard.com/product_info/ , i am sure there are other apps that work as well if not better.. The Firewall portion is not that good..oh well, it does stop adds/banners /forum/smile.gif

It will be another symantec product soon . i guess??

@guard is a kind of an internet filtering utility. It can filter out adds and pop up windows (I hate geocities!). It also functions as a firewall if I'm correct. It's not shareware, and you can't even get a demo anymore. @guard will be integrated into an upcoming Symantec product.

Even though ads cause the page to load slower they keep the internet the free and open place it is. Think, if this trend of blocking ads spreads far enough services on the internet might cost a lot more /forum/frown.gif

I personally just put up with them, I don't mind looking at a few ads, or waiting a few extra seconds for a page to load, because they help keep this great site alive (and most of the rest of the internet for that matter).

If you want to kill this site and others like it, or be forced to pay for the content via a subscription, programs like Atguard are the fastest way to make that happen. Do you think there would be free TV if everyone stomped out the commercials? Nope, it would all be subscription like HBO, etc. (or worse, they would weave the ads into the shows like they did in the movie 'The Truman Show'). That's what ad blocking software might do to the 'net. You can't have it both ways - either free and endure the minor annoyance of ads, or pay for the content, or worse, have the ads embedded in the content where they are impossible to remove.

And Nathan G, it was EarthWeb that bought SysOpt.

I first mentioned the banners and using AtGaurd at here several months ago without such a vocal response SEE HERE: http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/001493.html
$$ and time sure seem to have changed the response/attitude. /forum/wink.gif

I pay for my internet Service and my System, its not free for me. I pay for that bandwidth. Now if i used NetZero i would tolerate them hogging my system/internet resources.

I Do not believe apps like Atgaurd will be the downfall of great sites (Like Sysopt)!! They may actually make people who make these ads/banners ensure that they are less intrusive! They seem to be getting worse these days. pop ups, flashing Giffs etc...

I wonder what having a subscription fee for visiting a site would do for the level of membership and overall worth of a site. /forum/smile.gif Hope it never happens!

I dont mind ads that are seemless to site and are actually selling something i may use, and see thier worth... But ummm..
well i said enough

"Free TV" is a misnomer, isn't it? Because we all pay for cable tv service, don't we? /forum/smile.gif

Hey guys. We all like this site. We all participate. We all want it to stay. We all understand advertisement.

If all it takes to keep this site blooming, is for all 4000+ members to click on banner once a week...I think we should. It'll keep everyone happy and it doesn't skin our backs to do it. I don't necessarily do this for other sites, but for Sysopt, I think it is worth the finger movement, no?

I was only, light-heartedly mind you, commenting on the 'Yes/No' 'Yes/No' flashing freakishly like the eyes from some crazed cartoon character. Like DeepSky says, it's kinda too much to look at. -That was all.

But really. We support each other, no reason not to support SysOpt. Just a click from everyone once in a while should do it...

Instead of SETI@Home & RC5 apps, how about a "Team Click"..automatic ad clicking to ring the cash register sort of like a background screen saver...then everyone is doing "click duty", running up impressive numbers..

WOW....That was fun...just spent 30 minutes clicking banners and "seeing" where they lead too. Must have done my months share /forum/biggrin.gif

That will raise a few statistician brows. “Let’s see . . .hmmmm, there seems to be an anomaly in banner clicking trends this week, must be sunspots, no. . ., no . . ., could just be junior members pushing the envelope and leaving a post in the General Discussion Area and inadvertently clicking the banner on the way out, yes . . ., yes!!! . . ., that’s it!!!

I am 100% with Scott, Zacko10000, and Bleeding Edge on this one.

I consider: The painless investment to help keep this site going: 1 click, per banner, per week. (Or more.. /forum/wink.gif)

Then, I consider: The benefits - the help, assistance, support, comraderie - I derive from this site's existence...

For me, there's no contest.

Joel provides a simple yet clever solution (after doing click duty /forum/wink.gif )

CMonster, have you hit that Linux banner yet? /forum/smile.gif

darn keyboard!

Pardon my mistake EarthWeb it is.

Let me point this out to you clickers -lol .....
If all those "clicks" dont generate a dime of revenue $ (cause your just a-clicken-chicken hehe) the perceived value per click, will DROP.(by the add people) keep on clickin..
This is not meant to offend, just pointing out the obvious long term effects of your actions.

Yes that's very true - but getting rid of banners altogether is worse...

Yes I now see that all of about.com's banners are the flashy with constant animation.. man that's annoying.
I fail to see how no banners would be worse though. You could still have advertising, maybe plugs for donating stuff, etc. Just no annoying banners and everyone is happy. I still think this site is cool as hell, I just find it interesting that it's supposed to be so much better now that it was acquired by earthweb and I'm just not seeing it. I honestly link to the message board and that's about it, I don't even go by the main page anymore, not enough updates on articles or reviews. What I love about this place is the people who post here as opposed to other message boards. I'd just be disappointed to see this site go down now that it's been sold and all which is my first inclination at this point. But the earth web press release on the acquisition would lead me to believe otherwise where scott will get future compensation based on the future success of the site. For that alone I would click on banners if that's what everyone here thought was best. alright, I'll get off my soap box now. I apologize if I offend anyone by this post, I'm not trying to, just commenting on what I had seen lately.
