Hi There You All-Knowing...

I'm having major problems with my HDD. It became extremely slow, transfer rate with Easy CD Creator (Small Files) only 300 kbs. For big files it.s the normal it always been, approx 3500 - 4000 kbs. I'm using W2K with Via Apollo MVP#3 Mobo, Amd K6-2 500 Mhz, and on Ide 1 my C: as master, Atapi CD-player as slave, on Ide 2 D: and E: as master and Yamaha 8424 burner as slave. C: is in UDMA 33 and D:/E: is in PIO mode. The slow one is always the HDD in IDE 1. Tried defrag, reinstalling W2K, Bios update, swithching HDD:s, and so on. Nothing Helps.

Help Needing Tero.

PS: HDD:s are in NTFS.

Since you are using a PIO drive on the same bus as your UDMA HDD, the UDMA will not work. Both drives will be set to the slowest standard of the two.
Also, make sure that your HDD is set to be master. Some drives does not like being jumpered "Cable Select" at all. Same for your other drives of course.
You might want to try setting your CD-writer as master on the second channel.

Since you are only getting that slow transfer rate with small files, one might suspect that the HDD cache is damaged. I've never seen this happening though.
Could be driver related as well...

But hey, I'm not one of those "ALL-Knowing" http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks for the advice, but they are masters (both HDD:s) and on different buses. Moving the burner to master haven't had any change whatsoever. This is quite confusing, because never even heard a thing like this.

check in device manager and see if you have DUAL FIFO or just FIFO, this will affect the transfers A Lot !!

FIFO?
IDE?
Are you talking about the same things here? I've never heard of FIFO on the IDE bus. Serial, yes, but not the IDE...

Where can I find more information on this? I hate when I miss these important things!!!

Try to get some info on AMD site, setting/connecting components on IDE's, it will help you a lot, they will tell you what is the appropriate and which should be the master and slave in one bus etc..i'm talking based from my experience. All the info are there from loading programs till to complex configuration. Before i'm not satisfied with my system, it is very slow reading/write my hdd too but now it is okey, i'm using AMD also but it is Athlon 600, but the theory applies the same. That's the first best way to do. You need an info on what you are doing before you proceed to a complex one, basic firts. So you will save your time and effort.

Hope this help,

make the HD the master, then let the slave for that your CD-ROM, then make the burner the slave for the CD-ROM, or is that your setup now?

BEOR, I have noted the dual fifo entries under IDE controllers in device manager as you say. Am curious what this is and how it influences transfer rates.
