If for example I have an ata66 mobo with an ata66 hd and an ata33 cdrom on the same ide channel, will the hd work at ata66 or will it default to ata33?

Most ata66-capable hard drives ship defaulted to ata33. You must have a newer cable for the 66 speed. This cable has 40 pins, but each conductor has its own grownd, which makes it 40 pin, 80 conductor cable.
I have an ata-66 from Western Digital and just recently got the Promise Ultra 66 to run it on. The Promise pci card came with one cable.

jbob is right. I went through the WD HD ata/66 phase, and I learned that as long as you're using the 40/80 cable and the drive is capable of (and set to run at) ata/66, it will, and the slower HD (ata/33) will run at the slower speed or transfer rate.

Thanks for the info. I have the ata66 cable. What I was wondering was if I connect this cable to an ata66 drive as master, and a standard cdrom as slave, will it be possible to have the hd work in ata66 mode? or will the ata33 device(cdrom) slow the whole channel down to ata33?

I know that on the BE6 boards, the DMA/66 BIOS will tell you if the drive is set to 66 or 33. It will run the drive at whatever the drive is set to.
