hydraulic,
I must say I do agree.... although as I'm not married (nor at 16, old enough to be), it's my parents that don't like the time I spend online...

I've always been able to find help on my questions, and am more than willing to contribute to discussions when I feel I can help. That's the thing I like the most about the message boards here!

according to your profile, you have been a member since 3-14-99 and have 31 posts!

hydraulic,
Whenever you would like to see more about a person that has posted just click on the little face with the ? mark that is above what they wrote and it will tell you more about them such as when they joined the bbs, how many posts and even more personal information if they choose to disclose that information /forum/biggrin.gif

ps. I really enjoy my time that I spend here at sysopt.

i am really grateful that sysopt is here. i am a new computer owner and whenever i have a question or need to know about something, i come here to ask the forum for answers. i have also learned a lot about computers here. people i know in my major (computer information systems) who i used to think knew way more than i did, now know less than me, thanks to this site.
my boyfriend does not like me spending so much time here either.i guess we must all be addicted to it *grins*

how do you make those smiley faces?

I must say this is much better than most because you don't get flamed for stupid questions when you don't mean to ask them. (Which I have done on occasion! /forum/smile.gif) I am somewhat addicted too. My boss doesn't like it either! :O

I am not sure that you can tell how long a person has been around and it should not matter. I have changes user names 3 times I believe. The reason for the name changes is that on some bbs's that I frequent there is some kind of elete status put on the long time and frequent posters I do not like this so I change my name. This is a good BBS with some very smart people willing to help others but it has it's downside also. Some very bad advice flows. This is becomming all to common on all the boards. See rant in GENERAL Forum. Some posts I read here tonight really set me off. I have gotten very bad advice myself resulting in some bad results. This can give the board a bad reputation. Overall though I would rate this board very good. There are a few bad apples in every barrel.

What happened Bleep? Did someone give you advice that screwed up your system?

Bleep,

I'm sorry to hear that you feel that way. I truely do not belive there is ANYONE at this board that would intentionally suggest doing something that would harm your system. Of your last 10 threads in the general discussion forum I have not found 1 response that was out of line. As for people coming to the bbs and looking for advice or giving advise I always take everything with a "grain of salt". I would find it highly unlikely to have multiple bad postings in a single thread.

Hope things turn around for you /forum/biggrin.gif

I bet this is one of the only boards that has a 'how great this board is' post, without some loser spoiling it and just sticking in THIS BOARD SUCKS post. Thats mainly the reason I like it here - I can respect just about everyone here. On other boards you tend to befriend a few people and fed up witha another group of people.

Also people here are very patient with ignorance. This helps novices and people who just need a brush up on a certain aspect of computing alike, and allows us all to learn more.

Just a thought here...
Sometimes we might read something too fast and think it says one thing... when it really says another.
This happens to me most often when I "proof" something I wrote, and miss something cause I see what I meant to say rather than what got to the screen.
Glad there's an edit here! /forum/smile.gif

Way back when, CMonster told me about this great tech site called SysOpt. I checked it out (lurking for a good while) before I made my first post.

Right off the bat, the Members here treated me with respect and seemed very eager to help me, and in so doing, I have received some great help and suggestions in desperate times. I have learned and always continue learn so much from this site.

I think we have some of the most knowledgeable, wise, and gifted people around when it comes to things computer.

Bleep - I have found that a good general rule is to read alot of posts/replies - you can usually get a 'feel' for whom to listen. Another would be to wait (if possible - and hard to do sometimes, I know) for more than one reply. If someone is blatantly mistaken there will be another one or two posters to let that person know about it. It's a pretty good system of checks and balances.

Many Jr. Members newly on this board give fantastic advice also. After all, 'Jr.' is just the amount of posts here, not an indication of experience in the real world.

Also, another consideration is the information given by the poster. If one is vague or unclear about a problem or information given, it could cause speculation instead of specifics. A typo can produce something quite different than what a poster wants to convey. It's important to give as much clear and concise information as possible.

And lastly, I agree that if one is not sure about the info he/she is giving, at least indicate that you are not sure. There's nothing wrong saying so! /forum/smile.gif

It's fantastic to hear such positive feedback. I'm proud of the evolution of this board, and site, and the caliber of the people who frequent it. Happy Halloween (eve) BTW /forum/wink.gif.

AuraEdge:
There was not one thing in my post about sysopt "Sucks". There also was not one of my comments that downgraded SysOpt it's owners, its operation, or its content. If you are saying all members here are perfect you are sadly mistaken. At least I know I am not. The post was made to tell some persons that giving advice to others should not be done without some knowledge of the subject. I consider myself somewhat knowledgable and if you do a search on my posts I do not post drivel. Also search on one of my old user names (Bud) check out my posts and then rate me not on one post that you have evidently missread or do not understand. One other thing is that if you dont want to hear the answer do not ask the question. There is no board on the Internet including this one that cannot stand a little critique now and then.

I don't think that's what AuraEdge was saying - he said he likes it here because no one felt compelled to insert a "this board sucks post". He didn't say that you did.

My verdict of sysopt is that it's run by really great people, care about it's members, so it then attracts members of a high caliber, my full feeling is expressed in sign the get well card for welsh wizard, who is my husband, and always raved about how good this BBS was and that it was the best he had found on the net.

This board is great. It's members are mature, intelligent and knowledgable in many areas, not just computers. Electrical engineers, armed forces, vintage motorbike collectors, medical technicians, sysadmins, whatever.

In response to Bleep, I would like to point out that, IMO, your criticism is articulate and welcome. No-one has posted a "This board sucks" post, as AuraEdge says, and no-one has said "Bleep you suck get off this board" and started a flamewar. I cannot speak for others, but I understand what you are saying, and respect your right to say it.
When you pointed out that members may have been giving misleading information, you weren't flamed, other members wanted to know what exactly was wrong so it could be fixed.
That's what makes this board so damned good.

OK, my turn now!

Great site! /forum/smile.gif

I usually come here before calling the manufacturer's tech support. Why? Because I've always found that people who have worked on a problem in the real world are better suited to help me. Like U-96 said, the membership here is composed of people of all ages and from many different fields. The extra opinions on a problem helps solve that problem a lot better than relying on someone reading out of a book written for engineers (no offense to you engineers, I myself am one).

Like Mntsnow, I take everything here with a grain of salt. This is not a slam on SysOpt or its membership, I simply wait until I've had several responses before trying them out, particularly if it's a problem that is way outside my expirience.

As for the person thinking about posting a "this site sucks" thread, they better think twice, because I think most of the members here would disagree.

For the record, I'm am a problem solver, a darn good one too. Customers of my previous employer would be suprised to find out that even I have to get outside help somtimes. I'm always glad to be of service to anyone that needs help, and am grateful that the people here are willing to provide me with help when I need it. I think this site is an excellent resource for anyone, technical or not.

BTW, for those who haven't been here very long, we like to have fun here too! Just look around at some of the topics in the General forum. I sometimes come here just to see what new and totally off subject topics have been posted!

Thanks to SysOpt and its members for making this a great site!

Bleep! I didnt mean anything of the sort. I meant that the people here are all mature enough to not start a flame war, as many other boards digress into. Your's, along with everyone's input is always welcome. After all were all here to help and learn.
Rarely on another forum will you see a 'hey do you think this board is great or what' post. Most other sites have posts that have many many people ruining it for everyone else. I was stating how mature the people are here, and how, regardless of age, can treat all others with equal respect.

Yes this site is the BEST , I live in the UK and if I get stuck with something I only have to post a Query and someone suggest's an answer ,and everytime they are right , much better than throwing the computer through the window (just a matter of time)

It is the best board I've come across and sometimes I'll just stay at the site all day and refresh my browser just to see what pops up! (Yes, I will obtain a life... /forum/smile.gif) And what I really like is you generally get top-notch advice and are able to share your experiences in return. Kind of like high-tech bartering, huh?. Thanks again!
