can anyone tell me where I can get an ESD(electro-static discharge) kit that includes a matt and wristband?

I've got a wrist band and grounding port that I might be willing to part with if I've got an extra one. Let me see what I can come up with. What would it be worth to you? C.C.

Jameco Electronics is one source:
Whole 3M Kit: Nice but pricey... <A HREF="http://www.jameco.com/cfm/viewdesc.cfm?part_num=159994" TARGET=_blank>[here] /forum/smile.gif

Other Places that certainly carry them: http://www.newark.com/ And

thanks for the info, but I still have one question, and please feel free to have a laugh at my expense aver this one. I know that the wristbands are supposted to be grounded, but where? Do you plug the thing into the ground socket of a wall outlet? again please excuse my ignorance regarding this matter but I decided I would rather risk looking foolish instead of possibly shocking the hell out of my self and learning the hard way. /forum/smile.gif

oh and Nathan, thanks for finding all the links for me, I know it must have taken some time and it's greatly appreciated! you da man.

No this is a very Good question!!
I would just buy a wrist strap and do the following when working:
1)ALLWAYS Unplug AC cord ,monitor too do this before you put on wrist strap!-reason for edit
(make sure your UPS is off/disconnected as well!! .. dont laugh, it happens)
2)attach ground strap clip to chassis of case and put on wrist strap
3)work on equip that you are attached 2 /forum/smile.gif

4,5,6,7) NEVER trust AC outlets are wiried correctly!(earthed, hot&neutral not reversed) I mean it NEVER! your life could depend on it!

This is best procedure for the max safety of you then equip!

I feel this is safest because there is no difference of potential between you and circuit boards ( should mean No ESD events).AND mostly keeps you out of harms way.. unless you find a big capacitor .hehe
Keep in mind ATX supplies are ON(suppling cuurent) even when system is off!

You could connect to Earth through a good ground like water pipe (no PVC) or better yet ..Ground rod(s), and yes Buliding wiring IF checked out safe and actually earthed, thats more for setting up a "workbench" shop type thing...if you do this "workbench" make sure whatever you are working on is also clipped to the same potential!
As far as Priorities Remember yourself first, then the equip!
Again great question! and please get advise from others on this Topic(this is just how i use my ESD strap) I zorched a 100 buck board (at the time) cause i wasnt using one...:O
I say just get the 9 buck wriststrap with clip , unplug system , then clip on and Dig in!!!..

One more thing... don't ever handle a monitor with the ESD on! Monitors hold their charge a lot longer than capacitors and are extremely dangerous. I know, we really have no reason crack open a monitor casing, but you could still get zapped if you touch the video input cable while wearing an ESD.

Thanks guys, glad I didn't have to learn that lesson the hard way. /forum/wink.gif
