I am currently unable to start windows 98...not even in safe mode. When I try to I get a message saying ' insufficient memory ' or ' windows is bypassing system files '.
I have plenty of memory...is this perhaps something to do with himem?
...Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

I believe the message "Windows is bypassing system files" is shown when Windows is trying to start in Safe Mode.

For the other message, have you checked to see if you RAM is OK? Is the correct amount of RAM displayed when you boot? If you suspect that your memory may be damaged, try DocMemory at http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp
(thanks to smokin1 who posted this in another thread about a week ago).

Good luck,

After over 10 hours of dealing with this problem it has finally been rectified...although i feel like a jibbering wreck and not quite sure exactly how I did it.

What kinds of things did you do in those 10 hours, reinstall Windows?
