If I hook a Hardrive up through my LPT using one of those convertion kits, will it change my drive/partition letter assignments in win98. I'd like to use an old 4gb Western Digital to backup my system and was wondering if this will screw my partiton layout. I have a c:\ d:\ e:\ & f:\ all on one HDD. Please respond ASAP.

I doubt if it will mess up your current partitions - depends on the software driver you are using to enable the parallel port to access the hard drive. Is this some sort of kit enabling you to both power and enable data-porting of the hard drive in some sort of external case, or are you getting creative with a pair of wire cutters??

please tell me you're not using a soldering iron to do this......

Axel,

No soldering iron. Don't own one. I'm just looking through the Tiger Direct Catalog and saw the drive converter kit and had a thunk.
At least that's what I'm callin' it. My tape drive is dead (I broke the frikkin' adapter to an Iomega Ditto 2GB Parralel(Sp) and don't know anyone who has one I can barrow) so I'm scraping around for options.
Thusly my delima bred my question.

Anyways, that's that what and the why of it.

Ay dude, why don't you just get a removable hard drive rack for $15 and throw in an 8.4GB HD for $86?

I took a old external 4X CD rom and yanked it out of its shell then hooked my 6GB hard drive to the printer port.It also works with the 16bit card that came with the CDrom, but i cant get it to work all the time.It works fine with the LPT port.

tang has the right idea - take a look at promise technologies - they have a removable IDE RAID1 solution - disk mirroring - speeds up access speed and gives you full auto-back-up - a drive gets zapped, and it will rebuild the mirror......
