When I switch on my PC after a few seconds everything freezes up. I have to reset it then I get a message in the Microsoft start up menu saying Windows did not finish loading on the previous attempt.
Then I choose '1' for Normal load and everything is ok.
What do I have to do to remedy this problem ? All I got was a Windows quick restore disk with this PC which I bought last week. It is a Compaq 5446.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you have some driver that isn't loading properly. You need to go to safe mode, and then see what you have loading on startup. It is hard to know what it would be, not knowing what your system has for hardware etc. You might uninstall the different drivers in your system properties while in safe mode, then reboot and let windows redetect all your hardware.

Try running scandisk... I had the same problem on my computer, but run it through the Thorough Mode.

been there done that with compaqs. the problem on my parents computer is the the cable modem does not always kick in when the computer boots and causes a network timeout that freezes out the computer. i usually have to take about 5 reboots in the morning to get the thing working completely....
but do try booting using the option to load one driver at a time. when you get a problem, you have found the problematic driver, if indeed that is what it is.....good luck

here is a good one for you. Create a file if you don't have it in your c:/ drive called bootlog.txt
After successfull load find the file and search for 'Fail'
it is a pretty big file but it should look something like that:
[000F6E97] Loading Device = C:\CDEXPERT\ACTCD.SYS
[000F6EA1] LoadSuccess = C:\CDEXPERT\ACTCD.SYS
[000F6EA1] Loading Device = C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
[000F6EAA] LoadSuccess = C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
[000F6F84] Loading Vxd = ndis2sup.vxd
[000F6F84] LoadFailed = ndis2sup.vxd
find all fails ( there will be a lot of fails down ata the bottom saying that some font fail to load:
LoadStart = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\TIMES.TTF
LoadFail = C:\WINDOWS\fonts\TIMES.TTF Failure code is 0016
disregard it and don't worry about the part with fonts)
Then go to microsoft site and search for bootlog.txt If you can't find anything post a hread asking for analysis of bootlog.txt file and we'll take a look at it.
Hope this will help.
