Hi All
Running Win95a, p200mmx. Just installed a Hi-Val (no snickering please, heh) 24x internal cd-rom. it crashes the app when trying to install/setup on any cd. Also crashes Explorer. Some info i brought up:
this is what config.sys says:
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH
DEVICEHIGH=C:\CDROM\GSCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD000 /v
DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\DRVSPACE.SYS /MOVE
this is what autoexec.bat says:
rem - By Windows Setup - LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX /D:MSCD000
(the 'rem' line was for previous cdrom i took out i believe)
isn't there supposed to be a Windows driver VCDFSD.VXD ?
any help appreciated thanx

Do you really need any of these lines? Rem it all. Keep the drivespace reference if your actually using drive compression (questionable.) But the rest, ugh. Windows uses its own memory management went it loads. Himem.sys and DosHigh are absolutely a no-go. The DOS cd driver isn't necessary. Since Win95 loads its own 32bit driver for that also. Most systems should have nothing in these two files. Use the sysedit program to edit these files. From the Start/Run, type in: sysedit on the command line and these files will come up. After you do that and reboot your system, go to Control Panel/System/Device Manager and see what's up with the CD-Rom properties. Verify that "sync transfer" is unchecked and stays that way. If "DMA" is checked, uncheck it for the time being. After you test out the drive, go back to DevMang and recheck "DMA." If it works with DMA, leave it that way.

ay yi yi
thanks Bleeding Edge & CMonster~
bleeding from the ears here Edge...ahh
I...
deleted the info in config.sys and autoexec.bat no go
removed cdrom from the device manager,
rebooted
deleted all Hi-Val 16 bit DOS drivers from
C:\CDROM dir
when i did the reboot the the shut down post said:
C:\LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX /D:MSCDOOO
Device Driver not found: MSCDOOO
No valid CDROM Device Drivers selected.
I...
put MSCDEX.EXE in C:\CDROM dir no go
rem MSCDEX.EXE from C:\CDROM dir no go
Did a 'find' for MSCDOOO ...File Not Found.
ok. Windows hung up at the Windows screen.... rebooted in safe mode, rem'd everything again, reboot. ok.
CMONSTER:
i am using the all new cables that came with cdrom, and plugged em in where the old cdrom's went; running as Secondary Master, like the old one...
First hardware installation Win autofound and installed...but not the drivers? This 2,3, & 4th time Win won't autofind/install hardware, tho it shows up in DevMgr. If I am guessing right, the drivers aren't loading?
Can still play music cd's and read cdrom files, but still crashes at any install.exe/setup.exe on all cd's
Pls excuuuuuuuuse the long post.
Thanx fellas
Methinks I can do this.... i mean, i did configure that modem....
