Hey there...

I've got a Mitsumi CD-ROM FX322M!B (originally came with my first Gateway G6-350), and I think it may be on its last legs, but I'm not sure.

When I put in any cd, the drive will spin for 3 sec, then stop for two, then spin for three more secs, then stop for two. This cycle will happen for 4 or 5 times, and eventually it will load or read whatever program or data is on the disk. This happens whether I'm just accessing data on a cd or when I'm trying to install a program from the cd.

I've tried cleaning the lens and cd's, checking and unchecking "insert auto notification" and "dma", but nothing matters...

The cd is definitely not running like it did new, and installs sometimes take forever...Any thoughts?? Cheers http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

BTW...And if it is crappin' out, can you recommend a good cd-rom (or cd-rw, or dvd, since they're all pretty quick nowadays, yes?)

Same thing happened to me recently when working on my Dad's computer. I took the drive out, took the top cover off so I could see the lense. And then grabbed the can of compressed air in a desperate attempt to save the poor thing. I went over it REALLY well and it's worked great ever since! Boy was that thing dusty!

Try it and let us know what happens!

May I suggest replacing the data cable?

I recently experienced the same issue and the cable took care of it.

Maybe its just loose, in which case fully unplugging then replugging it (with the pc off) will alone take care of it - otherwise try replacing cable.

Off topic but my wife and I both grew up in Carol City.
