I recently got some extra cash, around $300. I do not know what I should buy, but I know I want to spend it on my computer. Are there any cool new devices out there that I could get. I recently upgrades most my system so I am looking to buy some "extas."

If you upgraded your comp., why don't you get some new softwear to show it off? /forum/smile.gif

How about a portable MP3 player, like the Diamond Rio?

Or an all-in-one fax/scanner/copier/printer?

Or save up for a DVD writer?

Or get the Creative four-point surround sound speakers?

There are ENDLESS ways to show off! (and to cause driver conflicts)

I think I am going to with the portable mp3 player, the new rio. I am just afraid they will be obsolete, but that would be a great thing to have.

Get a CD writer and a realy nice portable CD player and recond better than MP3 qualitiy audio for up to 83 minutes, and it should cost you about the same in the end if you get a cheap CD burner.

At mp3.com I think they have listings of car stereos with that can play mp3's. AuraEdge do you have the new Rio and not like it or the original, because I would get the new one.

Buy a really good USB scanner, like the HP5200. That's a nice piece of kit. And go to Taco Bell on the change. /forum/smile.gif

Welcome to the digital age! Hard drives will be digital in not too many years! NOTHING WILL BE MECHANICAL!! Cassette tapes used to be the greatest thing. Then CDs were the big hit. The end of the compact disk is coming closer. Evertime I go to Staples I look at where their voice recorders are and over half of them are digital! Nomad is the best mp3 player out there. No removable media, has an FM radio, smaller in length, width and depth than a deck of cards (seriously), magnesium case, included voice recorder (4 hours storage), made by CREATIVE LABS (that should be reason enough). There is a NOMAD II coming out early next year sometime. It will have a lot more stuff along with USB support!

I hope you guys who don't support digital music players remember this argument in a few years /forum/smile.gif. What do you think, mp3 players are just going to...disappear?

Untill they sell a digital music player that holds as much as a CD, not just minutes, but total capacity, that costs the same as a cdplayer and CD-R drive, then I will change my tune. When CDs came out I figured about the same, anthough I did think they would have cd recording decks for the price of tape dacks by now, they are here, duel.

http://www.esware.net/empire/hardware/cdrom/images/brujo.jpg If you want a home mp3 player, you can get this one now. There's some info on it at http://www.cdmediaworld.com/ There is another one but i can't recall the URL. If you want to continue just listening to mp3s on your computer (hqving the system on and playing mp3 songs and nothing else), check out Sonicfoundry's Siren player. Even if you are partial to the one you're using now, Siren is worth a download and look-see. Really. http://www.sonicfoundry.com/Products/ShowProduct.asp?PID=187 If your into music soft, checkout their other products too. All music related.

Maybe a MIDI keyboard ...you know? Don't have to be a musician or know music anymore. Might just become one fooling around with it. Write, edit and mix your own tunes.

Might want to think about a nice comfortable chair too. Some nice ones for $200+...it's a good investment. I spent about a month finding just the right one. To me, it is just as important as the computer components.

I like the idea about a MP3 player. I just bought an RCA Lyra, and I love it. I costs a little more, but it uses off the shelve compact flash cards, supports MP3's and RealAudio G2's. It also has enough power to support future formats with just a simple software upgrade.

The biggest plus, it supports IBM's microdrives, if they ever make it to full scale production. The microdrive comes in at 340mb, with 1 gig expected in the next few months.

Another possibilty is Pine Electronics new MP3 cdrw player. Just drop you mp3's to a cdrw, pop the cd in the player, and you've got a 650mb mp3 player. It retail's for under $200 US.

I would LOVE to get a portable mp3 player, but only 60 minutes of space? come on...as soon as I can store about 200 mp3's at a time, then Ill jump on it....does anyone know of a car stereo that you can buy that plays cd's with mp3s? just curious

Rob, that's CD-R disks where it is possible to make music cds - not CD-RWs /forum/smile.gif. CD-RW is just a huge disk becuase it is possible to delete, etc.

Drat it, I was so proud of my shiny new Rio! /forum/frown.gif
FM radio would be nice.

Well, I got the old 32MB Rio and it's great for going running, working out, etc. A memory upgrade would be good but I'll wait till prices go down.

I paid only $50 (after rebate) however (the beyond.com deal that is now expired). But you can get the Rios at ValueAmerica, too.

P.S. Don't give me none of yer stories about buying the Rio for $30, or getting it for free with a chicken dinner thrown in. I won't stand for it!

Warthog, not to dispute, but some new cd players can use CD-RW discs as well as CD-R's. Sony has one on the retail shelves right now. You are right that old cd players had prob's with RW, but this is changing. As for the Pine player, it does use CD-RW's.

www.mp3.com (http://www.mp3.com) for other car players http://webdev.mp3.com/hardware/all/car/

I can't wait to hear reviews/user reviews in situ when they come out.
