Ok, here's the story. When I boot my computer with a data disk in the CD drive it reads it fine, but if I eject it and put it back in, the drive won't read it. It tells me "no cd in drive." And when I boot up with an audio cd in the drive, it "kicks" it out during bootup. I can't even get audio cd's to play at all. Yes CD player is installed. I did get an error message one time with a data disk during bootup. It said "String error at b00000" or something like that. I have never cleaned it. Could it be that simple?

If you're using win9x, try removing the cdrom in device driver, and then let it get reinstalled. Also, if it never worked, check the jumpers and cable connections, and set its motherboard BIOS IDE location at autodetect.

That sounds like the logical thing to do. But after using a bright light and sticking the canned air way up in that sucker, Waaa Laaa!
I must have exorsized it cause it started to work. I guess kids with sticky fingers playing cd games are a bad thing after all. Tomorrow I invest in a cd cleaner and some handi wipes. Thanks anyway!
