I just got Norton Ghost. I have backed up my system after starting from scratch. I saved the images to my D drive (I have 2 HDDS partitioned into 3 parts- C: primary 4.6GB, D: primary 13.0 GB and E: extended from C 15.4GB) and was curios if there is any difference in restoring from an image that is not compressed v/s fast compression v/s high compression.

I ran Ghost in all three modes and got images varying in size : 671 MB, 431 MB, & 356 MB correlating to compression mode. Of course the high compression would work best for burning cds but I have always thought of compressing things as taboo. Is this something I should worry about?

Thanks-dave

I'm not an expert, but I use it nearly everyday.

Compression is mainly to save disk space. If you can get by without it, I wouldn't compress. The reason being is you might not get some files to decompress. But if you are saving it to a CD, then you may need to because the CD only holds 650 MB right?

ith norton ghost running over networks then
comression is good faster speed over the network.
there is a option to make a image in 650 mb diskspans so you can use 2 or more cds to
save the image but first have enough space before you make the image because you can write directly to cd with ghost .

What version is that in buitenb? I wasn't aware of the feature.

I didn't see that either. I am using Personal Edition. I'd love to have that option.

Also, is the fast compression any better at avoid the problem with uncompression?

I use 5.1 multiple times a day at work over networks and from CD's and I never knew of that spanning feature.

Do tell!

about compression just use high compression
then you get smaller files and the cpu is fast enought to do it so when you use a
4 or 8 speed cd rom drive the image will
be faster on the hd and its safe enough
just after burning the image(s) on cd check the cd s with cdrom analyzer when that is good delete the ghost images that the way i do it i have two systems and works real good
even with netbios !!

Does the spanning option in 'options' automatically split images into ~650 MB images? I haven't got enough to back up to try it yet. If it does-Great!, if not I need to limit what I decide to backup in the future. Thanks for that great info Buitenb

nope the switch to use is:
split=650 for cdr
split=100 for zip
split=250 for zip plus
split=1000 for jazz and so on !
i have also powerquest frive image pro newest version but ghost is easier and better !

I guess I'll have to read up in the manual about switches. I won't ask you to explain it all since I have printed out the manual, but do you have to work in DOS to use switches? I am not really too familiar with DOS. Thanks a bunch!

ghost is a dos program and you have to use
the switch at startup .
