CD ROM - Goldstar CRD 8160B

Hi everyone,
When the computer is booting up, I can see the CD driver, it say that it is installed, but when I get to Win98, I click on the drive, it says "cannot access te drive".I tried everything. I downloaded some drives from the net(DOS)but it didn't work. In the device manager window, under system properties, I can see the CDrom, Goldstar CRD 8160B, click on the 'properties'and it says: this device is working properly, but when you click to the driver tab, it has none, and I cannot check the 'driver file details'. Then I tried to Add new hardware, after I selected hardware type, in this case the CD rom controlers, clicked next, it couldn'tt find the Goldstar cd rom, or reconizes it's driver when I try to load(Have disk) the driver. What should I do? Where can I get more info on this matter

Is it recognized as Master or Slave in the bios at bootup?
There are jumpers involved for this on the back side of the cd player. With no jumper installed, our Memorex cd players came up as Slave instead of Master, and Win98 could not find it although the Bios saw it. I fixed it by scavenging a jumper off an old cd player.

thanks for replying. I don't know if the Bios reconizes it, as Master or Slave. I guess,
I haven't tried everything yet. I'll let you know if it is. and if it's the problem.

these models and the 8240's have known 'readability' issues and there are firmware updates that you can get to fix this. in some cases the update works, in others it won't. check to see what firmware revision you have. in the cdrom properties, settings tab you will see the version in the upper right. if it's less than 1.19 there is an update available for it. i'll look around and post the link to it in a bit ...

Hi Ana

My sons in College and he is majoring in art the wife and I have been trying to convince in going into graphic desine. He says it sounds boaring, you know how teenagers are.
Could you give me some advice on the subject that I could use to convince him. He is real good and we hate to see him waste his talent. Thankyou
