I hope someone can help me figure out what the problem is? I'm building a new machine with the following specs.
AMD K62-500
FIC PA2012 M/B
256 MB PC100
ATI Xpert 98 AGP graphics
Diamond Sonic Impact PCI sound
3Com 10/100 PCI ethernet card
18 GB WB hardrive
TEAC cdrw
Windows 98

When I loaded Windows I received numerous blue screens and various errors i.e. VxD, fatal errors etc. I had to reboot 7 times to get it up. I loaded the drivers for the miniport and bus mastering from the FIC cd and the video drivers and it was up for a couple of hours max now when it gets to the logon screen and I enter a password it starts to reboot and will not come up at all. I had a AMD k62-300 (100mhz)laaying around and tried it and it has been running fine with no problems. Can it be a bad processor or is my fan heatsink to weak. Any help would be appreciated.

a lil bit of thermal transfer goop between heatsink and CPU goes a long way. In my case the CPU temp dropped 10 degrees. Try it

Your motherboard BIOS may need a flash upgrade to handle the faster AMD chip. Some do starting at the AMD 450 and going up.

You'll also want to make sure the CPU voltages are set correctly for the chip - those setting should be documented on the FIC site by board.

Another thing to take a close look at is the RAM. AMD is picky about the make, and model of RAM you use with their higher end chips.

Have you checked this site out yet? It has some info you may need. http://www7.tomshardware.com/mainboard/97q4/971110/index.html

Thanks for the quick replies I will try the thermal paste and see if that helps. I have the lastest BIOS and the board is a ver 2 which is AMD recommended and I used the settings the AMD website had for this board.

I just wanted to give an update. I added a new fan and some thermal paste and it's working like a champ, so thanks for the help.
