Hey. I have an Adaptec 2940UW SCSI controller card that I wish to connect both wide (68-pin) and narrow (50-pin) internal devices to. The controller has both 68 and 50 pin internal connectors. My question is: can I simply connect my narrow devices to the narrow connector and my wide devices to the wide connector? If I terminate both of these chains, does this introduce 3 termination points (including the controller)? Adaptec's site has a FAQ on how to connect wide and narrow devices to the 2940, but it shows the narrow devices attached to the 68 pin cable with the use of 68 to 50 pin adapters for each narrow device. Since each of these adapters is $30, I would rather not. I tried the setup with terminated narrow and wide chains attached to both internal connectors. Everything is detected and seems to work fine, but I have intermittent SCSI timeouts and read/write errors. These errors point to termination issues. Thanks for any replies!

Yes you can use BOTH internal chains as long as you DONT use the external connector as well. As for the termination issues go in to the SCSI bios and DISABLE the CARDS auto termination. Also make sure you have the drives set to spin-up at startup (this will help prevent time-out issues).
