Just put together PC: RAM,CPU, BIOS running OK.
But when I quit BIOS an error message comes up: "SYSTEM DISK ERROR, REPLACE DISK AND PRESS RETURN".
I tried putting in Windows98 CD but it returns the same error message.
Has this something to do with my having to put in an MS-DOS disk at this stage ?
If it is, can I copy across one from a PC I currently have with Win98 on it ? and what is exactly on it ?

HELLLLLLP !!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can go into the bios and select the CDROM as a boot drive. The options allow you to pick the order. Such as A: C: CDROM LS-120...
Slect the order thst is good for you.

Is this a new drive?? Has it been formated and partitioned?

To make a win98 boot disk from a win98 comp.

Start->Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs

Select Windows Select Start uP Disk.
Insert a clean floppy and there you go.

Place this into the A: drive, and make sure the boot order in your bios has A: before C:.

When prompted select the option with CDROM support. The run setup from the CDROM.

CHeers Banti !

It is a new drive and no it has not been partitioned yet.
I bought the Hard disk (Western digital) OEM to save a few quid, but it came without a driver disk so I am having to feel my way as I go.
Is it a normal to have such an error message return to you after putting together a new PC ?

Yes it is perfectly normal. The bios is trying to start the OS from the boot sector of the HD, but nothing is there. After you get the win98 disk. run fdisk anf format on drive c:. You can also do this with a win95 boot disk, but there will be no cdrom support.

This will not get rid of the message (when you try to boot without the floppy) but it will allow you to install win98 with the win98 boot disk (or boot directly of the cdrom from bios).

Good Luck,
Banti
