I am new to the techie revolution. Unfortunately I found out too late that Super socket 7 was not what I wanted to get into. So for now I am working with a PcChips M598LMR motherboard. With onboard 64bit 3D AGP Graphics Accelerator with 8MB frame buffer. 3D PCI Sound Pro on board.
Alldetails: http://www.pcchips.com/598lmr.html.
I am running this board with AMD K6-2 450Mhz. I would like to use DVD. Is this possible with on board AGP video? I tried installing Creative Labs 8X DVD with Dxr3 decoder card and cannot get the system to recognize DVD (win98), I have yet to get the sound to work. Installing the DVD drivers must have knocked something out in audio. I would really appreciate some advice. I have bought the DVD and a 30Gb HD. If I must ditch this board due to restrictions which motherboard should I get? Slot 1? Which brand? What chipset? Help! Thanks for any feedback.
George.

I'd recommend that you look at www.asus.com (http://www.asus.com) and the FIC web site - I think it might be www.fic.com, (http://www.fic.com,) but I'm not sure.

I prefer intel I/O chipsets - the 440 series is pretty good - the 810 and 820 chips have been panned by critics as "premature" and overpriced so far. I dislike VIA having had bad experiences with them in the past, but hear they have improved.

with a slot1 mobo, you can typically do a LOT, even with socket chips, so id have to say look towards either slot1 or slot A boards, and then look at either a pentium, celeron or ATHLON chip as your processor.

On AGP, I wouldn't touch a X4 speed card as yet - most affordible RAM and mobo bus speeds aren't up to using them. stick to the x2 AGP mobo's and cards.

AVOID integrated components- especially onboard video and/or audio. AVOID combo cards - such as integrated video/sound or sound/modem.... - typically these are much more trouble than they are worth.

Other than that - have fun shopping....

With your integrated video and audio there's most likely some BIOS settings you'll have to fool with to get everything working right. Or then again, it may not work well at all. There are , however, some great super 7 boards out there. Like Axel said, check out Asus and FIC (www.fica.com) offerings or Abit and Tyan. Just make sure they have plenty of expansion slots and support for ATA66. (Pick up a copy of Computer Shopper to get an easy start with comparing specs.) If you go with slot 1 or A, you'd be talking about a change of CPU also. with super 7 you'd be able to keep your current CPU. Depends on your pocket book!
