Anyone tried using their computer and a headset to make phone calls? I was thinking of purchasing Labtec's LVA-8550 headset for that purpose. Is the voice clarity good? Need any special software?

It is quite surprizing how good it can be,the sound quality that is.I have tried Mediaring
Talk 99 as well as Yahoo Messanger voice reproduction is quite good in both.

I'm interested in voice input as well. A few questions:

Do you really need the gaming speech recognition software for gaming speech recognition? Won't the conventional speech recognition software like from Dragon do the job?

Is it possible to communicate with audio while on the internet with the same phone line?

Is a special mike required or will any one that will fit in the back do?

Bazango-
no, you'll need some kind of special software to transmit voice over the internet. As far as I know, dragon is only for transcribing your spoken words into text. I know there are apps out there for voice comm other than ones meant specifically for gaming, but I haven't checked them out.
The connection it uses will be like any other dial up connection- it will use your phone line. You'll have to deal w/ a busy line while you're using it.

I've been using a labtec headset for about a month now for online gaming through roger wilco, and it's worked great. The only problem that I have with mine is that after extended use, the earpads aren't comfortable. Pay a couple of extra bucks for one with big, padded earpieces. It'll be worth it.

There are a couple free voice-over-internet
software you can download. Battlecomm is good but you have to pay to register and unlock its full features. By far the most popular is Roger Wilco and it is totally free! I use a labtec headset/boom mike as well, and after a bit of adjustment and recording playback, it works fine for Team Fortress and Delta Force. Check it out here:
