I have had three HD's fail in 2 months with the same MB. Could the board cause this? One was WD and two were Maxtors.
Thanks

It could also be a bad IDE cable.

My friend had a problem with a mobo doing that. What is your mobo?

In what way did the drives fail?

I have changed the IDE cable. The MB is a Soltek. And, the HD's are mechanical failure(2) with arm clicks. The other one just screeched loudly. Thanks.

Hmm. The PSU could have blown them out. My friend had a PC100 board and the same thing happened. I think that PC100 boards and Solteks are both made by Alton.

My girlfriends computer has also gone through three hard drives in as many months (motherboard is an Intel). I don't know what is causing this either, I originally thought there may be some power fluctutation (one of the HD failures happenned during a lightning storm) so I bought a Belkin Surgemaster plug. I thought this had stopped the problem but her new Maxtor HD has developed a mechanical failure.

Any more ideas?

If the HD is not being read correctly by the BIOS, that could cause some problems.

My Soyo board needed a flash after I first bought it because it was putting HD's into PIO Mode 4, even if the drive was not capable of it.

Check and see if there are any BIOS updates for the boards.

Hang on........did the first HDD fail during the storm? If it did then it sounds like it has done something to your PSU rather than your motherboard....

And your girlfriend did it on purpose just so you'd come over and fix it for her! Man she must be pining for ya! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Hmm... very strange!!! It is very unlikely that the mobo would cause the HD's to fail. For 3 HD's to fail in 2 months must indicate an outside problem. I would say an outside source of EMF (microwave, hoover etc...) is causing these HD's to fail. Your computer should be as far away from these sorts of electrical items as possible.

I know this may sound strange, but are you sure these HD's have failed. What happens to them when they fail? Have you tryed to get them working in another PC? It may be that your BIOS is playing up and not supporting the drives properly, even though they ARE fully working.
