Protection error

I cannot install my new USB scanner (Epson Perfection 1200 Photo) because just after starting the installation, suddenly Windows (98) shows the message: "protection error 0E in 0028:0001539A" and I have to reset the computer.
Does someone know what it means???

Give us all your PC specifications ie...

Operating system
Motherboard Manufacturer (Chipset)
Processor
etc..
