I have the good fortune of being connected via cable modem, and it's a good thing too because my regular modem doesn't get along with my mouse.
I have the Compaq 5717 (Pentium 3-450) and I have installed all the latest softpaq's. Everything else on this pc run's beautifully, it's just the modem that gives me trouble. When I use the modem to dial my phone, the call goes through and everything is fine, but when I END the call, the mouse freezes. Everything else is unaffected. I have checked for conflicts, and there aren't any, at least not with the mouse/modem.
Thanks for your insight,

When you say there aren't conflicts...what do you mean? Do you mean there's no yellow exclamation points indicating problems -or- do you mean you know that the IRQ & port addres for each device (mouse/modem) is unique?
What port is assigned to the modem?

Thanks for your interest;
here's the specs for my modem settings.
Lucient V90=DSL
IRQ 11 (shared with PCI steering and vidio accelorator) COM 1
uses FIFO buffer
Hardware flow controle - Error control
And my mouse is using IRQ 12 (not shared)

Is this a serial mouse? If so, what comm port is it on?

hmmmm, using IRQ 12 I'd bet it's a PS/2 mouse, am I right?
If I am right, then I'm really not sure about the solution to the problem. Ya see, usually this type of problem is from a mouse and modem using the same resources or port address, like when the mouse is on COM port 1 and the modem is on COM port 3. And usually changing the modem to use COM port 4 will fix it.

The mouse is a Logitech Trackman on Com1 Port 3f8.
As far as I can tell, the Compaq 5717 doesn't have a Com2 !!

Dustyrun;
how do you change the address?

Look in your BIOS/CMOS setup, you should be able to change the address in there for your COM ports.

Shouldn't the mouse be on a different Com port then the modem?
You should be able to go to "add new hardware" then choose "select from list" then pick "com port" and windows should set up com 2 with address of 2f8.
