I have no access to my new 640gb WD-AARS despite the fact that it is present at least in device-manager.
If i switch to my older 320gb AAKS I have access.
Everything is ok also if i am using an IDE-drive instead of a SATA.
Both configurations on the same system, one after the other.
Maybe i could remove all drivers and add this 320gb-bootdrive as second drive to my 320-ide-drive and then retry. Bad idea?

It seems i have found where the problem lies.
on the label i have read:
winxp, single partition set jumper 7-8.
since i wanted a single partition but not winxp, only data-drive i have really set jumper before formatting.
now i must set that jumper in order to ide-drive to recognize the sata-drive.
So i think that jumper-problem- no jumper needed for my task(data-only drive)-means drive cannot be recognized in my
sata-sata-configuration.
Possible solution: empty drive and reformat without jumpering, right?
Maybe i can solve it otherwise without that jumper by reinstalling drivers.
for bootdrive 3512 driver is used, for second sata-drive 3112 driver seems to be needed. Or should i also remove 3512 driver? when drive is attached as bootdrive i have no chance.
2.BTW: on the label it says too:
advanced format drive to achieve full performance:
winxp, multi partition and cloning software users-use wd align software at:
..... advformat.
pls explain this too. Thanks a lot

here is the actual situation.
http://community.wdc.com/t5/Desktop/Second-Sata-Drive-No-access/m-p/57418#M2736
i can now decide between primary and extended partition.
which one is useful if i am using it as data-storage-second drive only?
Of course extended, but what if i am setting it up as a primary partition?
If no OS is setup then i will be recognized without problem, or not? thanks a lot

Once the jumper is set so you can see the drive in Disk management, you are good to go.
Just do not exceed 4 primary partitions and you are fine.

It seems you didnt undsterstand exactly what the problem is now.
I am about to setup the drive again on my sata-system without jumper since after doing this on my ide-system using the jumper the sata-system couldnt see it.
so i removed the jumper. then did all the procedures on my ide-system. incl. format.
maybe i should have done this the other way round. if the formatting on sata-system was succesful drive will be see on ide-system. but not the other way round. we will see now.
i will format drive as extended partition. I only need one partition for data-storage. i dont see an advantage to set more than one, do you? its only for images/videos. other data will be saved on usb-drive.
Ide-system- plus 2 sata-drives
The good thing is when using ide-system i will have two speedy sata-slots.
I will now buy another sata-this time 750-drive. if i have two identical ones it could be confusive, right?

I did the reinstallation(the right way) on SATA-configuration but formatting(without jumper) was accidentally made later(was waiting for your answers) on IDE-configuration now. The same procedure which i did WITH jumper when this second drive couldnt be seen on the SATA-system. But this time, without jumper, i can see it!
Maybe it was a simple configuration-confusion by me. I though formatting a new drive is enough. I am sure this drive must be seen eighter jumpered or not.
Hurra! Thanks for your patience.
