recovering deleted data(pics)

hi all.

is their any free programs out their for recovering accidentaly deleted files.

my brother formated his hdd but forgot to back up a couple of files with pics and stuff in them, nothing critical enough to purchase any software but if their is any such free ware out thier he would like to take a crack at recovering them.

He will need it because should they have been over written, they are probably gone.

as far as i know he just loaded the os(xp) and he just deleted every thing in the D:\ drive . I beleive that is where the missed pic files were. will find out monday or tues on
how he makes out.
